Johnson Leathers

March 2 · Instagram ·
I’m writing to let all of you know that Johnson Tam, the founder of Johnson Leathers passed away in the early morning hours of March 1, 2023, after a six-year battle with cancer. Most of you probably have no idea who Johnson was, but it’s important that you do.
Johnson was an absolute master of the craft, and he would often work late into the evenings because he preferred working alone and undisturbed. He took so much pride in his work and always stressed the importance of quality craftsmanship. Johnson would often examine the work of other makers to see how they did things and find ways to improve. Johnson was a wizard with a pair of scissors, and he was fiercely loyal to his one pair of Shozaburos he'd been using for decades. He enjoyed a good meal, classical music and his favorite color was blue because it reminded him of the sky. He loved living in San Francisco. He spoke with a heavy accent that was often hard to understand. He could be temperamental, impatient, and stubborn, but he was also extremely generous, kind and caring. To some Johnson left an impression of being aloof and reserved, but if he knew you, if he trusted you, he would talk non-stop telling you stories of his life. When he smiled and laughed you knew it was genuine. He never faked it…he didn’t know how.
After Johnson retired in 2019, he would often tell me how he felt he lived a good life and accomplished the things he set out to. He built a successful business. He bought a home, cars, and motorcycles. He traveled the world. He’d come a long way from the 26-year-old that arrived in San Francisco and didn’t speak a word of English.
Periodically he would show up at the shop unannounced, shuffle his way to his worktable and ask if there’s anything he could help with. There always was. Being back at the shop was comforting to him and he enjoyed working without the pressures of running the business. I am thankful for the time we spent together over these past seven years I am thankful for the things he taught me and his mentorship. I am most thankful to have had him as a friend.
Rest in power, my dear friend. You will be missed.

From what I understand as this predates my interactions with JL, from what I gathered here on the forums Johnson and Alan (still there) were effectively partners sharing responsibilities, but Alan handled most of the front of house along with Greg while Johnson more back of house. Somewhere along the line Damon came on board as Johnson faded into retirement, and I believe Alan and Damon have been running JL for some time now, and Greg is still there, to the point that many people were surprised when that post hit that there was actually indeed a Johnson.

I can confirm that they are truly a small, local business, where the jackets are made in house at their location in San Francisco, which still blows my mind that they're able to still do that. I just picked up an M200 from them in their newer 2.5oz goat and it's been great riding around the bay area wearing a true SF original. If you guys are local, definitely pay a visit, seems like they've been doing alot of refreshing in their leather lineup lately and got some really nice stuff.

Love these 2. Did you base these jackets on the Naked Sun jackets?
The grey one for sure was a mashup because the back of it it’s different from there it’s actually two different jackets of there’s put together

Those are East West Musical Instruments Co origin.

A bunch of Japanese branches does repro on EWMIC style, that includes Freewheelers, Jelado, Naked Sun, etc…

I currently have a Freewheelers Little Wings, which the front looks similar to the grey jacket from X83 with minor differences in the details.

Hah, i get you.

The original and the repros have their own attractions. The design, the leather, the details are just so fascinating that can get your attention every time you look at them

Ordered 1st week of August 2024 and delivered mid-December 2024.

3.25-3.5 oz cowhide. It's called cognac but leans a bit more burgundy which is just what I wanted.

Alan was great to work with and extremely patient with a noob (at ordering a bespoke jacket). Johnson nailed the look and the fit.

I don't think I have to spend much time describing the superb quality of Johnson Leathers. It's been well documented throughout this forum. Suffice to say, if you are in the market for a new leather jacket (custom or otherwise) and you have the budget, you are missing out on something great if you don't consider these guys.

I started out looking for a car coat but wanted (most of) the length without the extra loose fit. The mil-spec field jacket has too many pockets and wrong collar. The final product represents a mash up of many types but exactly what I wanted. After describing what I wanted for warmth/insulation, Alan recommended a Japanese merino wool liner (nylon for the sleeves).

I waited almost a year to post this as I wanted to wait until I put a few miles in this. I have worn this just about every day from mid-December 2024 until the sporadic days of April 2025, and just broke it out this weekend for the season. After 4 months of wearing it, rolling it up and balling it up it still appears a little stiff (but it feels a lot more flexible than when I got it.)
