Idk what “mid-priced” is but I own a Gloverall peacoat, which I like. I looked into the vintage USN peacoats but wasn’t impressed with the “newness” of it. They look too worn for my taste.

If you want something new I’d go look on eBay for a Schott 740N. They are all over the place for sub $200. Here’s mine with a throat latch I added and I’m just about to see the rank on the sleeve. OST me $150. They also come in gray. I would avoid dept store coats. They are wildly thin.

These are nice but they run huge and absolutely pale in comparison to the OG 10 button Kersey cloth coat. Hard to find in good shape. I lucked out with this unstenciled deadstock. Cost me $160.

I'd echo the recommendation for the schott 740N with my limited knowledge. I looked at some more vintage options that go for dirt cheap (at least in the UK) but they're typically a bit small for my build (48 inch chest). I got my 740N for £80, looks as good as new. Really warm and I find it gives me a flattering silhouette, I believe they're 32oz Melton wool, which is majority wool mixed with nylon for some durability.

I like Sterlingwear for a basic melton wool Peacoat. Even though they stopped making them a few years ago there are still plenty of them available on eBay.

Small warning for those in the UK: if you buy new here, thry're not only near twice the price of the US retailers, but also the UK marketcones come with an embroidered chest logo. If you can find a US supplier that doesn't charge the earth to ship to UK, even with taxes you'll come out markedly ahead.

I’m going to get a used Schott 740N from Japan. Fair price and an easy ship to HK. Currently feeling cold in the UK :)
Great choice! If you aren’t interested in chasing down an issued coat I think these fit the bill perfectly. I actually snagged a Schott 782 over Xmas. They call it the officers coat. It’s based on the 1913 naval issue pea. It’s nice. Has some small detail changes over the 740. Trimmer cut. Not as warm as the quilted 740. A bit dressier looking. Marginally longer.

They had them at Franks workwear in NYC for about $80 less than Schott offers online. It’s absolutely the last thing I need but I find when I am confronted with this stuff in person my resolve is significantly weaker and common sense was also on holiday.

I’ve sworn no more peacoats but if I ever find this Buzz x William Gibson I’m all over it. Seems like one of those saved searches that will never bear any fruit.
