Caleb Washington Manley, Lead Hill, Arkansas. (1825 - 1910)

I am often amazed when I see photos like this of what these folks lived through. Mr. Manley probably knew of the Alamo; most certainly knew of the Civil War, the assassination of President Lincoln, Custers loss at the Little Big Horn, and learned that men actually made flying machines and motorcars.

James John “Jim Crow” Chiles, (1833 - 1873).

IMG_9684.jpeg

The son of a two-time Missouri Senator & the future uncle to be by marriage, to Harry S Truman.

IMG_9679.jpeg

At a young age Chiles received his nickname for minstrel dancing which was popular entertainment starting about 1830. It had nothing to do with the Jim Crow segregation rules & laws that would come later in the South.

At the age of 24 Chiles killed a man when he commented on Chiles’ table manners. (He probably didn’t remove his hat at the table?)

When Chiles was 26 he married the 16yr old sister of Martha Ellen Young, the future mother of Truman.

During the war he joined up with Quantrill & rode under Bill Anderson. Most of Anderson’s men would winter over in Sherman, TX. It was there that Chiles killed two men he thought cheated him at cards & owed him money.

Chiles had a difficult time adjusting during the post-war Reconstruction era. For a time he ran a saloon & gambling hall in Kansas City, & stayed away from his hometown of Independence, MO. The courthouse yard in the Independence Square had a well where wagon trains headed West & local residents would fill their barrels & get their water. (The well is capped off today). Many gu*nfights were started over disagreements on the Square near that well. After Chiles returned to Independence to live, he walked away the victor from 9 separate fights.

He wasn’t so lucky during the tenth. During a confrontation with Deputy James Peacock, Chiles shot Peacock with a spinal shot to the back. Peacock then fatally shot Chiles, after which Chiles’ son Elijah Young “Little Lege” Chiles shot Deputy Peacock. Peacock’s son, Charles Peacock then fatally shot Elijah Chiles.

Yrs later when Truman would attend some of the annual Quantrill Reunions it was to learn more about his uncle. Truman’s wife Bess was related by a step marriage situation to Ike Flannery, another one of Quantrill’s men.

In the historical novel Woe To Live On & movie Ride With the Devil, the fictional character of Jack Bull Chiles is loosely based on Jim Crow.

It’s been a while & I‘m going from memory, Frank Lloyd Wright’s second wife & 7 children were murdered while they were living in one of his houses. Maybe Chicago or Milwaukee. Before their marriage she had been his longtime mistress that he kept. I don’t remember if the 7 children were some of hers plus some of his, or theirs together. Lloyd Wright, Jr., his oldest son, who hated his father has always been a suspect in the murders but the case remains unsolved, as I remember.

PS: Corrections after lookup. It was 6 children, not 7. Lloyd Wright, Jr was a suspect but a house servant was arrested for the murders. The case never came to trial after the servant died while waiting in jail.

Possibly, have you heard of Jesse Cole? Not a name known on this side of the pond.
Jesse Cole, famously known as the man in the yellow tux, is the founder of Fans First Entertainment and owner of the Savannah Bananas baseball team.

I had to look him up. Oh wow, he knocks Mick Jagger into a yellow hat.

No Sir, I have not heard of Jesse Cole, or his yellow tux, or Fans First Entertainment or the Savannah Bananas. Sports of any type just aren't my thing.

Jeremy Bentham (February 15, 1748 - June 6, 1832) was an English philosopher, jurist, and social reformer regarded as the founder of modern utilitarianism.

The Auto-Icon

In his will Bentham left his body to medical science. He also requested that his body be preserved and this ‘Auto-Icon’, as Bentham called it, was gifted to University College London in 1850 by Bentham’s surgeon, Thomas Southwood Smith. Today Bentham sits in UCL’s South Cloisters dressed in his own clothes and sitting in his chair.

Melania Trump, First Lady of The United States, arrived in London with her husband, President Donald Trump, at the start of their official visit to The United Kingdom. The Trumps were greeted by the senior British Royals.
Whilst the meeting was as standard as these meetings get, Melania's choice of outfit was hard to ignore.
