This pic has been posted before but it’s a favorite of mine. James Rainwater was born in Fayetteville, AR which is not far from Carthage, MO. I recently began to wonder if the Rainwater family had moved to Carthage with James as a child, & if so would he possibly have known Myra Maybelle Shirley (better known as Belle Starr), born & raised in Carthage & just 7 yrs his senior?

Myra Maybelle “Belle” Shirley (Reed, Starr x2) (1848 - 1889) was born & raised in Carthage, in a family that was moderately well off for the times. Besides the family farm her father owned several businesses which included the local livery stable, a hotel, & a saloon.
As an adult Rainwater first went to Carthage in 1879 & lived in & out of Carthage several times after Belle’s time there (& murder in 1889). Census records prove it was not likely they ever overlapped or knew each other. Brings to mind Martha Jane “Calamity Jane” Cannery (1852 - 1903) & cowboy Tom Horn (1860 - 1903) both born & raised in Princeton, MO. It really was a small world back then.

I have a pic of him in FL when he was a packer for Teddy Roosevelt & his Rough Riders preparing to go to Cuba in the Spanish American War. He’s wearing a hat but he’s at some distance in the pic.Always wish I could find pictures of the real Tom horn hat
Every picture I’ve seen he’s hatless

Thanks for this! Looks a bit like your modified Akubra! Can’t quite make out if it’s telescoped or rounded flat top~1886 during the Geronimo Campaign with Lt Charles Gatewood, Tom Horn served as scout, tracker, & interpreter.
