Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Nice Job scoring those. That brim flange looks like one of the wider ones that I have seen on the bay. Most I have seen will only flange a brim less than 2 5/8" in width with the majority being 2 1/2" or less. Thats a great price if it is as wide as it looks.

    Bashing other's Bashes ???

Hey Mike, there are several pics of the screen used hat owned by a private collector that was used in the Streets of Cairo scenes and others from Raiders posted over at COW. Its a bit worse for wear as it was beaten to heck but there is some valuable info if you want to know more about what made...

Hey nice score Stoney. The Stetson looks awesome and the price was killer! The other one is looking sweet too.

    Western, anyone?

I love these westerns you guys are posting up. Lots of great deals on OFAS on for these babies. You can refurb an old one and have it looking good much cheaper than buying just the felt for a new one. Even the old dogs can be turned around. Here's an old brown Miller Bros taco shaped piece I got...

    Flange and block cleaning

Spar Varnish is what has traditionally been used to seal hat blocks according to my reading. It is called spar varnish because was used to protect wood exposed to the seas on ships.

Vintage pre-sixties 7 1/4 Restistol Ecuadorian Panama Hat!

***Edit: This was made before Hat Co. bought Resistol in the sixties. It may have been made in the early sixties not pre sixties like the title says*** Man, I just won this natural toned beauty on OFAS and it just arrived today. I wanted so badly to have this hat work out for me but it just...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I would be surprised if the seller follows through with the auction unless they just want them out of the house. Some relationship gone wrong? :) Would be awesome to get vintage tube amps for that price though.

    Limits of blocking

You bet Bill. Major Moore was also correct in saying the middle piece is removed first as well on those puzzle blocks. That High Rider looks like a dang sharp lid on that link you posted and the price looks nice for a period hat. It comes in black and looks like it could be a good fit for your...

    Limits of blocking

My bad brother. There were only a few people posting in this thread and so I thought you were directing your comments at only those in it. Being one of them, I considered myself a candidate for your comments. Anytime I pop up with the wrong idea regarding hat stuff on here I will always be...

    Limits of blocking

I hope you don't mean me Tonyb. For the record, I am no authority on this stuff, I'm just sharing my experiences which I have tried to qualify as limited. I am a hobbyist who is working toward making a hat from scratch. I have only reblocked hats up until now and then according to info I have...

    Limits of blocking

Yeah I am talking about something different but principally would be the same , just using the tightening action of the band rather than the expanding function of it and switching the tightening mechanism to the outside from the inside. It is similar to a hose clamp but the inside has a solid...

    Limits of blocking

A while ago I also read about a particular hatter using an adjustable metal band to help with the blocking process, in getting a good brim break. The band is slid over the felt while on the crown block and tightened right at the brim transition.

    Limits of blocking

I don't know how they made that particular Eastwood hat but I know there are 3 and 5 piece blocks that dissemble a piece at a time to remove the freshly dried and blocked body. I have seen them in women's hat molds primarily because they tend to have more creative flares and curves that don't...
