    WARNING! Controversial poll ahead,...

where's the conflict. I voted for both. I fail to see why the theory of evolution is an inherent challenge to the existence of God. No reason why evolution couldn't be part of His grand design. In fact, the opening bits of Genesis talk about the creation of various life forms in Darwinian...

    A letter from Deanna Durbin

WHAT a cool story! BUMP! Am posting to get this one back near the top of the section, so that nobody misses reading it. Lauren, you've got to be the only person on the Lounge that's actually corresponding with a 40's icon. How very, very neat.:eusa_clap :eusa_clap

How many of you were taught this in high school? Or, at home?

where have all the standards gone.... I think this Lounge and the whole subculture it represents is all about rebelling against the current trend against dressing up for ANYTHING. My take on this is that if you aren't detail oriented enough to show up at a job interview at the very least...

Your favorite Scotch? Your Favorite liquor in general?

name yer poison Re: Whisky without the "e", (aka "Scotch"), I don't like the blended ones much at all. Single malts are the only ones I can abide. My favourites are the nice peaty Islay whiskies -- Laphroaig and all its cousins. I'd probably be happy just munching on a bag of peat moss (j/k!)...

tea in London ok, the Ritz is sort of a must-do, I guess, but my favourite place for tea in London is Brown's Hotel. Wonderful place if you like feeling like you're in an Agatha Christie novel, more intimate and less touristy than the Ritz. oh man, I feel a cucumber sandwich coming on....

    Show us your critters

Agnes the sheep, sporting my Dobbs Panama hat, a remarkably cheap Burlington Coat Factory find, considering what a nice hat it is. Same hat, worn by her friend and "sister" April, who is actally a collie mix, but has her summertime buzz cut. (Albert the kitten in the background")...

Not Sissy Actors but REAL MEN

Real men Here's a couple nobody's mentioned yet: 1. Senator Bob Dole -- for heroism and for triumph over adversity. As a young lieutenant in the 10th Mountain Division, stepped on a landmine while rescuing a wounded comrade during the siege at Montecassino (April '45). Was not expected to...

    TAG BANNED IN SCHOOLS?!

not it! not it! (Fie on political correctness!) Geez, this reminds me of a wonderful Kurt Vonnegut short story from the 1970s called "Harrison Bergeron". It is set in this futuristic nanny state in which pretty people have to wear masks to avoid making ugly people feel inadequate. Ballerinas...

    SUFFERING For Your STYLE

vintage lifestyle downsides? My good "modern" clothes are classic styles, which when you analyse them, are broadly inspired by the styles of the 30s-50s. So, vintage and repro pieces mix and match with this look quite well. A 30's dress can look quite modern / neutral, if you don't wear it...

    Show us your vintage home!

oops, wrong vintage My house is a bit earlier than golden era (1859) and I've chosen to "interpret" it in the style of the year of the famous visit that gave the house its Warholian "15 minutes of fame." That means, authentically not just a bunch of 1860's stuff but an accretion -- from 18th...

    Old fashioned names new again....

remarkable names of real people Speaking of Ima Hogg and other heiresses with funny names (yes, such a thing existed before Paris Hilton) Bill Lear, inventor of the Lear jet, named his daughter Shanda Lear. http://www.slecorp.com/b-productdev.html She hasn't let it get her down (see website...

Gerbeaud Confectionery? http://www.planetware.com/picture/pest/budapest-gerbeaud-confectionery-h-h058.htm Gerbeaud Konditorei Been in business since 1858, under new management in the 1890s. Terrific fin de siecle and a bit earlier atmophere. Was thrilled to find it online and see that it's...
