I work for a PR firm firm with mostly industrial clients and one of my co-workers did a visit to an oil rig where the entire crew wore these hard hats! They really liked them because it protected them from both the sun and falling objects.

As you would expect, those are extremely popular here in Texas. Every road crew you pass and every building going up has quite a few guys wearing those.

Restyling the OR hardhat

I don't think the tea kettle is gonna work to re-style the brim, though I've used a heat gun to strip paint, etc.. I'll bet with CAREFUL heating someone could roll the rear brim up and the front brim down. Without seeing one, you would probably have to leave the crown in the Alpine (Cattleman's) crease. Fiddlin' with the crown might mess up the headband system mounts. Of course, since I'm originally from the New Mexico/Texas area, I'm partial to that crease anyway.

Hardhat with a pinch bash

Hey boys and girls!! Don't have to worry about re-shaping that Cattleman's bash out of the aforementioned hardhat. I happened upon another company that makes a cowboy/western hardhat and this one has a PINCHED crown.

Add a little heat from a heat gun (if you've ever fiddled with one you know how much heat they put out) and a little bit of upward roll on the back brim and you're in business.

So who's goin' to give it a whirl??

BTW Phil, I spent 13 years (1985-98) living in Bryan while working at Texas A&M. I'm confident you're well into the hot summer months down there.

Not too hot today... only 83. Heat index of 97, but that's better than 95/105 like we had the other week.

It was 80 here on Sunday, but 55 yesterday and 30's with just a few token snow flakes today..supposed to be a high of 60 tomorrow. Humidity is extremely high for here at 55%. Ah, spring in Colorado!!

Those are among the reasons I'm in Colorado now. But you do get to wear summer hats much earlier than we do!

College Station

Pilgrim - I have a brother in College Station. Works for a wellhead company. I'll let him know about these hardhats, though he's more into "Gimme hats". I'll be in Boulder mid-June visiting my father-in-law. Hope it's not too hot. My folks live in santa Fe.

GF, I predict a lovely time in Boulder. It's a beautiful spot, and since humidity is so low here, you visiting from PA will feel like it's 10 degrees cooler than it actually is. Just be ready to pause when climbing long flights of stairs - Boulder's average elevation is about 5400 feet. It's a fun town to visit.

Speaking of elevation....

What I love is going skiing in Breckenridge with visitors from either coast. The town of Breckenridge (an old mining town, now transformed into one of the West's premier ski towns) is 9600 feet, and the mountain summit is 12,998 feet. (But I think the highest lift only goes up to about 12,000 feet). It's a place where the air is thin and seacoast visitors are humbled quickly.

Testing ones' aerobic fitness there only requires walking up about 10 stairs!

But if you see any hats in Boulder, chances are they'll be baseball caps (ubiquitous), western, or battered hiking hats. Fedoras are around, but scarce.

I love skiing in Breckenridge! Incredible town. Has a vibe to it that Beaver Creek, Vail and Aspen don't.
