Flowers in the hair

Alligator...
Everything else is too bulky. And nothing spoils the illusion of having gently and casually thrust a blossom into your tresses, as a big visible peice of metal...
I hardly ever wear fake flowers, mostly real ones, but if I didn't live in an urban area, I guess they would be harder to get.

I have very thick hair so barrettes don't work for me, some long dbl proned pins would be good to stick through rolls or in up-do's.

I always called them 'slides' but I think these, whatever they are called, are best! Having fine hair, I like to shove a whole manner of things in it that don't necessarily want to stay, but the 'slides' work great (with a bit of back combing nothing drops out lol)

Ladies, I'm bringing this thread up again to ask what your favorite place to buy flowers is, online. It can be either already finished flowers or the ones you buy to glue on to your own clip.

I'm actually especially interested in the latter, because I want to make some flowers that I can use as both a hair clip and a pin.

Also, I read in this thread that many of you ladies make your own flowers. Do you have any tips and tricks? Photos would be highly appreciated.

Yeah, this is why I use the pincurl clips when I make mine. That way the back of the flower can lay completely flat, and the clip part can sit just under the petals next to the side of the flowers. I've had to throw out a lot of flowers that I made because they didn't sit right.

KittyT, I have a difficult time visualizing this, could you show a photo or elaborate? I have not made flowers before, but I could imagine that the most difficult part is having them stay completely flat.

I usually use a barrette - nothing else will stay in my fine hair. Combs look more practical but they just fall out! Madness! x

Alligator clip. I have 3 flowers that I wear continuosly because of this reason. It's easy for me to use and re-position. It seems like with the snap barrettes if I try to take it out, it pulls my hair with it.

I wear more sparkly hairpins and fewer hair flowers in winter, but I do have a very pretty holly leaf & berry clip, and a mistletoe one. Mistletoe isn't a big deal here, so no one even jokes about kissing me when I wear it. Alas. Although it works well with a red silk slip on Christmas morning

Good bump on an old thread. I am not sure that Suzanne the Diva Pin Up even makes hair flowers anymore and you can say what you want about making your own but let me tell you ladies that her quality was awesome I couldn't have made em as well as she did with out a lot of trial and error. I should contact her and see if she got back into the flower business at all but I think she is super busy managing a tiki bar these days.

Yesterday I was privy to a young lady buying a brooch. She was going to take the pin part off to wear in her hair.

Hopefully people will not be willy nilly taking vintage pins apart to do this but if it is light enough I thought what a neat idea.

That's a good idea though, i have a few vintage brooches without the pin part, i never thought of trying to make them into hair clips.

I do have a dress clip in the shape of a leaf which is rather lovely and autumnal and i wear alot this time of year. I'm not sure if all dress clips could be used as hair ornaments, as some that i have are quite heavy, but this one is very light metal.

I agree! I think flowers that match the time of season are perfectly acceptable!

I do too! I really don't see why not, I think a colorful little reminder of spring is welcome, especially in the darkest coldest days. If you still think it looks odd, I find a nice alternative is a peacock feather hair clip.

I have to say, this may not be very stylish/authentic of me but I love wearing any kind of flower at any time of the year- e.g. right now I am wearing a bright yellow/burnt orange double orchid flower clip (I have black hair and am wearing orange lips and makeup for reference

). Perhaps there just isn't a very good selection of hair flowers where I am but I just love wearing brightly coloured/tropical looking clips even in winter.

Hi Frenchy56, I also wear flowers anytime of the year. I wear a flower in my hair to work most days and on the days I don't wear one I get comments like "where's your flower today?" I just find it makes me feel happy and fresh wearing a flower especially on a cold dark wintery day, it brightens the spirits! Fresh or fake doesn't matter and I have fun coordinating different colours with my outfits.
