I've never felt anything like this; no pun intended. It is so soft that it almost feels like... I can't describe it. This one is incredible. This was purchased for $33 from a Buy It Now! eBay auction that I ran into 30 minutes into it being listed. Either the seller didn't know exactly what he was selling or he just needed to move merchandise quickly. Either way, this thing made it into my hands. I have a few other vintage fur felts but this is just leaps and bounds beyond any other. My other favorite vintage I have? Coincidentally or not, it's a Brooks Brothers. I really, really like what came out of that store.

I would love it if anybody could possibly date this for me, or give me any information they know about Herbert Johnson hats sold via Brooks Brothers.

Yow, that is a nice one! I'm happy to report that I think I know how you feel, having just received a hat of my own today, also picked up from eBay at a very nice price, that's coincidentally pretty similar in general style and dimension. It's a "kitten finish" Resistol, and I'll be posting on it soon.

How wide is the brim on that one - 2 1/4? That's what my "new" Resistol measures and from the photos yours looks to be pretty similar. The felt on mine is more of a reddish brown but the band looks almost identical. Did yours arrive bashed like that? It looks nice - center dent? My Resistol came totally out of shape and I had to steam it and put in a new bash; I went with kind of a basic C crown.

It's just over 2" but not quite 2 1/4". I'll have to remeasure it but, yes, in that general vicinity. It came with a center dent -- I put in the front pinch.

Post pictures of the kitten finish Resistol!

Nice hat from a top of the line maker.....I don't think it's incredibly old...

Something about the font in the the sweat stamp has a 70's appeal to it..no matter. I don't think Herbert Johnson makes any junk regardless of the period..

Looks good on you old sport..ever try a tighter front pinch in it? It looks like it's crying for one to my eyes.....

Very Nice grab.....

Sort of like this, but more evenly? I did it very quickly. I'm also obviously very tired.

I think the hat will tell you what works best.......I'm partial to the close pinch.

It's a nice one...

Hard to end a week too early in the evening isn't it?

I don't think this is the hat for a close pinch. The wide one looks better to my eyes.

33 bucks for a hat your size. You lucky dog.

I tried the tight pinch, but I'm not into it, either. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

agreed..

Like I said , the hat will usually tell you what works best...

In this case I think it might have yelped when you gave a it a pinch....

I appreciate the try !

And regardless....a Great Hat !!

It looks great. What are the dimensions? (perhaps I missed where you posted them)

No, no... just neglect :)

Crown: 5 1/2"
Brim: 2 1/8"
Ribbon: 2"

I think the extra 1/8" on the brim is from the overwelt, or whatever you call it. I'm not really sure.

There was another thread I made about this hat located here. It is now up for auction. My post in the Classifieds is here. Good luck. I truly hope somebody from The Fedora Lounge wins it because it has always been my most prized hat, even moreso than the MacLachlan I sold late last year.
