I have not worn a boater since age 16 at school and my old school dropped them as an anti-elitist measure I suspect. I like the weave on the top one on the stack. The biggest problem at school was keeping them intact so we inevitably fibreglassed them and that made them heavy but indestructible.

Got my first boater, there is no liner so I don't know the brand. Not sure how old it is, just that its post 1934 based on the union label. Any idea when hats like this sold for 3.95? (assuming this is the original sweatband)

I received my new boater hat from Darcy Clothing yesterday. It`s made by Olney and appears to be of very high quality.

Here it is, posing with members of my vintage camera collection:

And a horrible image of me wearing the hat (it makes me look... larger than usual...)

My only concern is how is one expected to keep on of these hats upon their head? Or is mine just too large for me?

2.5" brim, 3.5" high crown, tag below liner reads 57750.

According to here: http://newspaperarchive.com/salina-journal/1956-11-05/page-11/, the store on the sweat went out of business in 1956.

Does the union mark, size tag, and price tag tie the date down to anything before 1956?

Liner is removable, with a significant patina of hair product.

something about these labels suggests an Italian origin to me.

hard to count the wpi. The variation in straw weaves used for boaters is wonderful, no?

WONDERFUL, Alan!! I do love all the weaves that were used for boaters and this one is no exception. The weave pattern is wonderful and it looks great on you! I especially like the tan color of the straw matched against the black, white, and green of the ribbon. :eusa_clap:eusa_clap

Thanks Steve and Josh. The seller had this listed as a 1950s hat... perhaps a decade or two off, but I'm not sure. I'm such a sucker for these, especially for a $25 BIN.
