Hat Kradle "A place to hang your hat"

Somehow I remember a similar device sold in police supply catalog circa 1980 that you would stick into the headliner of your car and use it to store your campaign, or western hat. A simple metal wire Y that held the hat upside down against the ceiling. Or am I imagining this?

Those kinds of things have been around for a very long time & have been discussed here before. In the South you can still find old sale barns, theaters & pool halls with them under the folding seats.

As far as trying to make your own by hand you will need some low tensile strength wire. Without roll forming equipment you will never get a nice smooth radius. It will kink & pucker, & if the tensile strength is too high it will just snap possibly causing injury. Unless you heat with a torch be very careful if attempting to bend anything stronger than a coat hanger.

Its called a "Hat Saver" , they're still available I'm sure . I think I saw some advertised somewhere , maybe Western Horseman Magazine .

Might be some on Ebay . But you could do a search , they're available brand New .

Not a fan of aluminum - it oxidizes and gets brittle.

I would think that using stainless steel would be the best choice. Otherwise, you would need to use a good quality steel, then make the bends and then chrome coat it to avoid cracking the coating. Costwise, the stainless would be better.

One could make a jig to get the bends perfectly set. Might not be a big problem to produce these.

Any other thoughts?

The tensile & yield strength of stainless steel rod is up around 70,000 - 75,000 & 25,000 - 30,000 psi respectively. You won't be able to do anything with a jig. It would take roll forming equipment & dies to do it.

The way these things are made is to draw red hot carbon steel rod thru a die. They would be drawn thru a die & cut to length in one step.

I think the stainless tig rods would work if a small enough diameter was used and you can get it in different compositions where some are more flexible than others. Heat would likely have to be applied to get the small diameter needed at the ends.

Well, I'm neither of those things but I did sell welding supplies for over four years and used the wire for a number of different little projects.
