Okay folks, this is the only fedora I own and I thought I would post some picture for you to see.

On the last UK summit in London, ob1al reshaped the hat for me, giving it a higher crown and a more Raiders-esque look. Thanks Al! :D

I like it alot, I am acually considering purchesing one. How is it holding up and the quality? Also, how do you care for it and water-proof it, if you did? Also, who did you buy it from?

Mycroft, thanks for your reply. The hat holds up pretty well and I bought it from Hats Direct about two years ago.

I've never waterproofed the hat. If anything, I don't wear it enough. I just treat it with care. :)

Looks great. The re-shaping does give it a more 'Indy-esque' look. An Akubra like that should give you years of wear.

Canyon:

That's a very nice lid you have!

I love mine as well. It's my daily hat, rain or shine.

Mycroft:

It's not a luxurious hat, if I may use that word, but it is dependable and very reasonably priced. I can't say for myself how well it will hold up over a long time, as I have only had it for over a month, but so far it has held up very well for me.

I like it because it comes open-crowned and I could bash it the way I like.I waterproof my hat with outdoor Scotchgard, and it has held up pretty well in rain and snow. I brush it off when I get in, and I use a hat stand (actually a guitar stand, but it works well).

I also got my Federation from Hats Direct, of course. I think for this model of Akubra they are the sole source. I plan to buy another one, which should last me for awhile.

You may also want to check out the Federation Deluxe.

To chime in on durability of Akubras - I've had an Akubra Banjo Patterson for approximately three years. It's been my general-use hat for most of that time (except for when I wear a proper fedora or summer Panama) To give you an idea of the amount of wear that it gets, a significant amount of the gold lettering in the sweatband has worn off...

The hat has been through downpours heavy enough that it's taken a few days to dry out (think of Seattle in the winter) and been dropped, kicked, sat on, and gone through the normal trials and tribulations of a daily-wear hat. It hasn't tapered, has held its block for three years, and, if anything, has aged well and gotten softer with use/abuse. I haven't done a thing to it as far as waterproofing.

The general consensus on this board seems to be that they are good, solid hats, and known for their durability. I can't say anything that wouldl be counter to that opinion.

You might want to do a search on postings by Renderking Fisk in this forum; he's a rabid fan of Akubra as well, and has sometimes been accused of being on Akubra's payroll :)

As far as suppliers are concerned, the US importer is David Morgan at

www.davidmorgan.com

but my opinion is that David Morgan tends to be obscenely overpriced. You can get better deals by ordering direct from various Australian retailers via the internet. Shipping to the US tends to be via air mail, and a two week ship time seems to be the norm.

Australian suppliers that I've dealt with include

www.hatsbythe100.com
www.everythingaustralian.com.au

Several folks here swear by

www.hatsdirect.com
www.strandhatters.com

and another good US source would be

www.noggintops.com

Yes, it seems like Akubras have an excellent index of price versus utility-
the vintage style ones like the Fed have a real rustic charm and really catch that vintage square crown aspect. I recently saw a friend's Akubra Fed. Deluxe and Squatter and was prettydarned impressed.
The Squatter is really vintage looking too. I looked like John Walton(Sr.) wearing it.
