Portland, Maine -- May 1942. Gasoline rationing was introduced, on the East Coast only, on May 15th -- using a simple system of punch-cards classified by ration category, with each punch assigned a specific unit of gasoline. Here a motorist gets his A-card punched for his weekly three-gallon allotment.

The allotments changed over the course of the summer, based on supply and demand. When the ration program switched to a "mileage rationing" system as rationing rolled out nationwide after December 1, 1942, the ration program abandoned easily-counterfeited punch cards in favor of stamps.
