tweed suits

No doubt this will be old news to most of you, but this is something I just recently developed an interest in. Tweed suits. When is it proper to wear them? I am a philistine and I do not know. Thank you for your support.

Wherever and whenever you feel like it. Perhaps if you were going to a function that had specified black tie, then tweed might not be an appropriate attire, other than that, wear what you want. You might like to know of a specialist in tweed.

Yip. In England, tweed was traditionally a country thing (one reason why the dadaists behind the Chap and its Tweed Revolution chose tweed: an awarenss of the old "rules", and a deliberate flaunting of them). In the US, there doesn't ever seem to have been the same notion, though tweed equally was never one for Wall Street. I gather in the USA it has distinct associations with academics, which has always worked for me. Only on completion of my second decade in academia did I ever realise how much of an influence those brief scenes in Raiders and Last Crusade have been on my teaching style!

Wearing a Shetland tweed herring bone suit for a wedding in Edinburgh. Like GHT said, you can wear your tweed suit where ever and when ever you feel like it. I like wearing the jacket to my favorite pub. Of course, cooler weather is best for both you and the tweed. I would highly suggest you take a trip to Scotland (if possible) and check out the suits and styles of tweed available. Harris, of course, but the Shetland's not too bad, either. Another suggestion if you make it to Edinburgh is Walker Slater who had very good service and all the bells and whistles (shoes, belts, ties, etc.).

Walker Slater make some very nice stuff indeed. Beautiful quality, though be warned if you, as I, like your trousers high in the waist and wide in the leg, they may not suit.
