Modern Sage Royal Deluxe OR. It's a little bit different than the ones I saw in Garland a year or two ago. Those were pretty much like the Stratoliner Special Edition in sage. Almost a velour dark green with a rust colored binding and ribbon. This is more brownish in some light and mossy green in other light. The binding and ribbon is more of a brown/green. I like it, I had hesitated to get it because I expected it to look so much like my strat so I am happy it is unique. I have a regular strat in sage that has a color matched ribbon that is more of a bluegreen. So all three sage stetsons are different.

Looks good on you. I think the color will pair with a lot of stuff.

ET, your OR reminds me of my ~1965 3X OR I found virtually NOS in a 1965 Stetson Centennial box. The color goes from a charcoal gray to a dusty gray with blue undertones. Unfortunately Stetson did not mark the hats like they did on the 150th anniversary, & they could have used the boxes for several yrs. There are older pics I've posted before.

That's a fine one, Jack! Great color.

Here's a pic of the liner of a 100th anniversary Stetson. It's not a western model (by a long shot) so I didn't include a pic of the hat but I did just post it in the stingy brim thread if you want to get a load of just how small the brims were on men's dress hats in 1965.

Got a new Akubra Campdraft from down under the other day. I finally had time today to start working on a crease. I think of it as a western hat. I wet it and put the crease I think I want it to have in it. My first time shaping an open crown. You experienced hat shapers tell me if I looks ok or if I have it messed up.

Thanks Dale! It's good to know that they did distinguish the 100th Anniversary from others (& my OR is not one of them). Also I'm curious of the grade of your stingy since you didn't make note of it? Also were there any other differences other than the liner?

The liner with it's red, white & blue bars reminds me of AMF when they owned Brunswick Corp, & Harley Davidson Motorcycles. The worst Harley's ever made were under the AMF flagship.

That hat is badness. Location is too.
Thank you. Texas Hatters has an incomparable vintage brim curling machine, and the leather band was something I had made by an Etsy guy, Larry something. I never get tired of the black hills.

Jeff, is Costner's Midnight Star closed now? I heard it is.

you know, I’m not totally sure. It may be. It has been difficult for places to stay afloat recently. I always loved the Deadwood Social Club, and at one time thought maybe Costner was invested in that one too, but not sure. I survived off of local pizza and local beer in Lead this time around.

He may have been invested in it but I never heard that. I'm all for it if it brings back the history, & gets the big corporations out.

His brother managed the Midnight Star for him. Plus he bought hundreds of acres just outside of town for that Dances With Wolves Park. I would hate it if he just gave up there.

I would too. That would be a travesty. I wonder if the park you're talking about is "1880s Town." They have a lot of historical items that were used as props in the film, as well as a whole town of authentic 1880s buildings that were relocated to that particular area just off the interstate.

*edit-- google yields that the Midnight Star, sadly, is closed. The Deadwood Social Club is unaffiliated with Costner, I think. Best restaurant in town, regardless. It used to be that you could only find it if you found a hidden entrance, and it was deliberately not advertised much. Now there is access from multiple places and it's clearly marked and easy to find.

Not sure about it's ownership today, & it didn't used to have the visitors center & all that. It used to be out on the prairie & the only thing you could hear was the wind. A surreal experience. Tatanka Story of the Bison.

Jack, the centennial Stetson I've got is from the Sovereign line. It's a top shelf hat....the fancy bow with the ribbon that's woven in and out of the sweat band in the back half of the hat, an oilskin liner behind the sweat, and a felted edge brim. I believe Stetson referred to theirs as a Mode edge, if I'm remembering correctly.

I can certainly see the similarity to the AMF graphics of the 70s Harleys. Interesting for you to bring it up.... I have another Sovereign Stetson from a later era (after that brand, too, was acquired by a large corporation) that is more hat in terms of brim but isn't even half the hat in terms of quality. I suppose the AMF takeover of HD was indicative of the larger trend in American mass production. Sacrifice quality for quantity. Still, without the buyouts, the companies likely wouldn't be around any more, so the knife cuts both ways. I won't even get started about Berkshire Hathaway and the boot business.
