Some questions:

1) I see mr. Lazslo put his panama hat on a chair, on its brim, and not upside down, how i know it's correct to do with any hat;
2) I see Sidney Greenstreet bring ,his panama optimo, by the crown and not by the brim;
3) I see another character ( i don't remember his name) put his hat on the table, isn't a good thing to do!!
4)I see all the characters with panama hat, Humpry with a felt hat (classic)
everyone wore like in winter season, is panama hat good for autumn or winter?

Hey guys, what do you think about it?

Is panama hat only for winter, for sunny day?

Thanks.
Riccardo.

I have noticed in lots of old movies that guys handle their hats in "unapproved" manners (grabbing it at the pinch in the crown, setting it on a table right side up). My guess is that is the way most men actually handled their hats, even though it wasn't the best way. We have a tendency to do what is easy and convenient. Plus, back then, hats weren't "special" like they are today. It was like throwing a pair of pants over a chair. They probably didn't think twice about the proper way to do it.

Men back then invariably grabbed their hats by the pinch because that was the only way you could tip your soft-brimmed hat to a lady. Today's hat dealers tend to hammer customers on hat care, but back then they didn't care. Why should they? If you blew out your hat, you'd only be back for a new one sooner.

humphrey in felt

probably he's in felt while the rest of the cast is in straw to differentiate him from everyone else. he operates in a different mental climate, a cooler higher zone, and therefore needs a heavier hat. it's good for the scene in Paris where he gets soaked at the railway station. in general, i think it's a sign that he's a heavyweight, the rest of the people around him are lightweights....what a lot of boozing there is in that movie. makes me thirsty thinking about it....

Good point richard. Also, wasn't Bogie travelling? Travellers always would have a hat in those days, and most, even in summer, were felt hats, right? Like the Stratoliners and lightweight Borsos. Never knew when you would run into a rainstorm.

...about Casablanca the movie...

Ok and thanks, i'm agree with you.
You are very nice answering me,thanks.

Back, certanly, hats were like our pants today, not at important thing just a "must" for wearing correctly.
They used to handle it,the hats, with easy.
It's for me a good answer, thanks.
Today, to put up a hat to a lady is,maybe, a little "retrò" and could be funny...among young peoples.
Today to wear an hat is not a "must" , but a pleasure and we make, around it, a great and beautiful "cult"...we handle our hat with religiousness..and we are a lot jealous of it.

Ok, Bogart was the "boss" of the cast, and he wore at a different way: using a felt hat...it was from French (in the movie) and he, maybe, don't knew panama hats...no, no...sorry...he was from NYC...ok...he was the boss!!

Are there any felt hat for summer...leightweight felt hat for summer...have i understand? Could you post aome example...or a link?

And...do you remember how many cigarettes did they smoke...how many smog on the set...?

...but i remember too that the weaver was not sunny, do you remember the fog on the last picture, at the airport...and the rain...and they wore,all, panama hats in the rain!?

It's a never ending story!!

Bye.
Riccardo
