That's what I was thinking of doing on a brown fedora. Given I wear it in the wind and rain a cord would be useful. I haven't quite given up my search for the right colour elastic yet, though.
They're easy to make, but I've only seen black or white elastic for sale - this has limited the number I've added to hats. Using pre-covered buttons, made for dinner jackets, makes it quicker.
I can quite see why turning the lounge into a strictly grammatical fascist state (with Fowler as il Duce) might quickly pall - not because good grammar and spelling are elitist, but because it would soon become boring. So I shall say no more on the subject.
Surely correct punctuation is never off topic!
This is though - which university are you based at, Alan?
The Queens' blazer Alan referred to can be seen at http://www.aeclothier.co.uk/sport.html.
Oxford has 'the Queen's college', founded in honour of Queen Phillipa, wife of Edward III; Cambridge's Queens' college was founded repeatedly, by Andrew Dockett, by Henry VI, by Margaret of Anjou (now we're on to the Queens) and by Elizabeth Woodville. Richard III was allegedly about to give it...
It's a pain in the neck, isn't it? It's doubly confusing as the full name of the college is 'the Queen's college of Saint Margaret and Saint Bernard in the University of Cambridge'.
Anthony, thanks for the advice, especially re: studs.
The Moville Clothing Company price range certainly seems to be preferable to that of the London legal outfitters (of which Stanley Ley seems the most reasonable); it's a shame that their range of pure cotton colours is so small, and that I...
I have been thinking about buying a few shirts with seperate (soft) collars, and thought I'd ask here for advice. Any helpful hints? I'd especially like to know about the pros and cons of different types of collar studs.
I have also been contemplating a stiff fronted, or boiled front, evening...
While that derevation makes sense, the OED believes that the term 'loo' is somehow derived from 'lavatory' or from 'Waterloo' (station) as slang for Water Closet (W.C.).
I've not heard a W.C. called a 'bog' for ages; I think it might be a schoolboy word. 'Loo' is more common, but both are more characteristically 'working class' words in England than 'lavatory' or 'toilet'.
Since both 'lavatory' and 'toilet' are places/processes of washing rather than...
That's a nice hat. Unfortunately experience tells me that a 2 1/2" brim is the minimum I can get away with without feeling self-concious.
Someone else should take it off your hands though.
Well, I've been looking on ebay and seen a few nice hats, but the majority have smaller brims than I'd like; the occasional hat which suits my profile either is sold by someone unwilling to ship to the UK, or is justly popular with other people too!
I'm a big fan of panamas. If only I had a camera I'd post pictures of mine: a slightly bashed about one I wore through the middle east 2 years ago, a Pachacuti rollable fedora that I've put a thicker ribbon and windcord on, and a Christy's optimo with the top squared off.
The Pachacuti is...
Well I'm certainly interested in finding out about the fit!
As someone 6' 2" with a 40" chest, in theory that should fit me. But I've a vague suspicion that they might not be very slim at the waist, as I (for the moment) am. If you wanted to PM me measurements that would be nice.
Thanks
This is an intriguing thread, as I've long been tempted by the Orvis rhinohide type jackets. They did also have a drill cloth jacket that looked quite good, but this seems to have been discontinued.
Mojave Jack, did you have any luck producing a more tailored fit on your jacket?
