Morality, hat size and the thrill of the find

I'd buy the hat, clean it, and give it as a present to a relative who likes hats and who it fits. Just because you can't use it doesn't mean you can't make a Christmas/birthday present of it to someone who'll appreciate it. At a thrift store someone who will appreciate might find it, but some...

Scotch Guard? Scout Felt Hat Protector?

Is it wise to Scotchguard wool felt? What about fur felt? I have several hats of each material and have read that you can Scotchguard a hat to help keep out rain. Does the Soctchguard damage or alter the hat (shrink it, distort it, bleed it etc) in any way? I'd like to do what I can to rain...

    Jaxon Bogart

Interesting-- thanks for the comments. here's the one I mean http://www.villagehatshop.com/jaxon_bogart_lrg.html There is another, very pricey, one that is called B2B Bogart. I don't mean that one- but this plain "Bogart" that sells for about $70.

    Jaxon Bogart

I've been browsing through some fedoras for everyday use that I wouldn't be afraid of wearing for fear of getting a bit dirty and beat up. I came across a hat called a Jaxon Bogart. It claims to be fur felt, but retails for only about $70. Does anyone have any experience with this hat model? Is...

    History Question

Some great insights there about the crease type. I'll try a second question since people seem to know this stuff pretty well: is there an historical perspective to brim size? I've heard some people say that larger brims are characteristic of the late 1930s and the 1940s and that smaller...

    Stetson Hats Question

Thanks again for the replies so far-- I've put both the Nostalgia and the Chatham on the Christmas list. I will probably only get one of them, but I'll let the gift giver decide what she wants to pick between the two. I suppose a little surprise is good. Eventually I will most probably get on my...

    Stetson Hats Question

Interesting-- I guess I'll avoid the Temple then. I do like both the Nostalgia and the Chatham. What I'd love is to get the Nostalgia but have the shop/seller shape it into the tear drop so it comes that way. I trust someone experienced more than myself with an expensive hat, I guess. Do...

    History Question

I've been curious about this: is there any historical difference between the center dent style, the teardrop style, and the diamond crown styles of hat shapes for fedoras? Did one predate the others or did they all co-exist at the same time? I'd read somewhere that the center dent was the...

    Stetson Hats Question

I've been asked what I'd like to put on the Christmas list this year, and I think a decent new Stetson hat should be on. I've seen three hats that I think look nice: Nostalgia, Chatham, Temple The Nostalgia looks the best of the bunch, but is described as "open" crown. Do they all come this...

Royal Stetson Saxon 7 3/8 Caribou

Saxons are great hats-- very durable. $50 is a great price too-- pity it's not a 7 1/4! I have a black Saxon and it's just a very nice hat-- well balanced in terms of size and fit. Back when I got mine I preferred black, today I think Caribou is the better color.

    Bashing 101

Just curious-- is bashing limited to fur felt or does it work for wool felt and crushable felt too?

Best vintage camera for the starting enthusiast?

I like the old German Exakta cameras from the 1930s-1950s. I have an early (1937) Kine Exakta and love it. The plus side is that they take regular roll film.

    Fall/Winter Hats for Windy Conditions

I have an old pilot's hat around. I use it for skiing and working in the snow. It's great for that sort of thing. I wouldn't wear it to work. It's quite warm though.

Wearing hat cocked to the side..

I've found softer hats that have a little more give are more forgiving to wearing on a slat than the more formed ones.

    Fall/Winter Hats for Windy Conditions

Well by "windy" I don't just mean breezy days, I mean days like today in Maryland where the wind is swirling a bit and gusting upwards of 40-50 mph. I walk a mile and a quarter each way to work, so I don't want to be putting the hat back on after it blows off a bunch of times or have it get...

    Fall/Winter Hats for Windy Conditions

Are they any vintage hat styles that can weather windy conditions? On good days I have a group of Fedoras, but when the conditions are too windy for them, what kind of a vintage style hat would work? Do Derby hats or the like stay on when the wind is really blowing hard, what about some kind of...

The Dumbest Comment I Ever Heard

A "Columbo" comment actually wouldn't bother me all that much-- I do a fair Columbo impersonation, so what the hell, right?

    Alpaca Felt?

I have an ancient rain trenchcoat that has a removable liner that is all Alpaca fur felt. I agree with the above that it's a coarser material than you would normally see on a hat. It's quite soft and comfortable, but I can't see it being used on a hat because it doesn't really look a lot like...
