The BBC series is one of my favorite shows from the last five years.
The American version... isn't.
But that's not to say it won't be -- it's hard to get a good feel for it simply because it stayed very close to the BBC pilot. You couldn't help but compare actors and scenes directly, which...
Bailey's in the coffee is a Christmas morning tradition in my family... and an indulgence I'll cop to on the odd Sunday morning. Whisky (Irish or Rye) works well after a hard night.
Never, ever on a workday, though. I'd probably forget to go to work. :)
Rat Pfink a Boo Boo may not just be the greatest movie ever... it may be the greatest thing ever! :)
Seriously, this movie was mindblowing. Apparently it started out as a low-grade crime flick, but 45 minutes in the producer (-slash-director-slash-writer) realized the movie was going nowhere...
I've also noticed a dramatic increase this season -- it was only last year that I seemed to be the only one in the city. Now with the sudden popularity of stingy brims amongst the younger set, it's a rare day that I don't see someone in a hat.
Someone else, I mean. :)
I love San Francisco. I've only been twice, but I would move there in a heartbeat. Every street, every building, every object just seems to ooze history.
My travel budget has been slashed since the second kid came along, but I'm hoping to be back next year.
We had it up north too...
While in the US Prohibition seems to have been a federal thing, the temperance movement was very active on a provincial level in Canada around the same time. The prairie provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta) were dry around 1916 to 1924.

Agree completely. The only reason I've listened to any of the Boston Blackie episodes was to listen to Morris -- it's not a show that you listen to for in-depth characterization or richly detailed plots! :)
Won a huge lot of ties on eBay, they arrived yesterday. I went through them, and was pleased to see that most of them were in wearable condition... some of them are ugly as sin, but all can be worn.
eBay Listing including pictures!
Not sure what I'll be doing with them -- thinking of...
We have two that I know of, one of which just started up this year. The pickings aren't as nice as previous years, but it's good to know that the idea is spreading!
My love for Maltese Falcon and Casablanca know no bounds, but I can't otherwise narrow it down to a list. Even just listing the 1940s movies I own on DVD will take too long. :)
Has anyone mentioned Detour yet?
My first true vintage find was in the early-Internet, pre-eBay era when I scored a number of detective pulps from an online dealer. Took about a month for the transaction to go through, after sorting out shipping, money orders, and exchange rates... but it was worth it to lay my hands on those...
A 1940s-era radio that I somehow managed to knock out of a third-story window.
(By "somehow" I mean "through an amazing lack of common sense and basic thinking skills")
Taking the train because it was cheaper than flying.
I haven't been on a train since 1998, during an airline strike. I loved every minute of it -- from seeing the backside of cities to talking with strangers in the dome car.
Now? Almost twice the price of a plane ticket, and much less...
