Going back to something a little lighter...
I stand by my statement -- there's no way I'd be able to start a car in 1945. My first car was from the age before fuel injection, and I would flood the engine regularly, especially when it got a little cold. Just couldn't manage the "down smoothly...
This thread is the bee's knees. :)
When my son got to the age where he started repeating everything Daddy said, I made a concentrated effort to cut down on my swearing, and used older slang whenever possible.
Turns out that saying "Criminey!" irritates people more than plain-ol' f-words...
Good plan. And though it might seem obvious, take note of how the recruiters are dressed -- if they're in suits for a job fair, it's a good indicator of how dressed up the office environment is.
After ten-plus years of office-casual, ranging from polo shirts and khakis down to T-shirt and ripped jeans, I recently started wearing a shirt-and-tie combo to work. At first it was to disguise the fact that I was sneaking out for job interviews, but I really enjoy the way it made me feel -- a...
No pics yet, because I think I need 50 posts before I'm allowed to. I could post links, but I hate doing things that take people out of the flow of the thread. :)
Back on topic, I tried wearing both of my fedoras with an A-shirt and jeans while making dinner yesterday. I looked pretty good in...
That's where I was going with my half-baked thought above -- I'm pretty sure that the culture shock would go both ways, especially for those young'uns (like myself) who weren't around back then.
I mean, I can handle myself all right in the modern world, and I like to think I know a lot about...
Random thought I had while perusing this thread:
If we went back to 1945 and asked people there if they would prefer to live in 2008, giving them the same knowledge of the future as we have of the past...
...would ANYONE say no?
It's a great idea, but I wonder if there might be some conflict with newspaperarchive.com -- a site that offers old newspapers in PDF format, but charges a subscription fee. If the Google scans are of comparable quality, NA will be NG.
I've been considering a subscription, but if Google gets...
Someone has already said this, but I really miss the single-screen movie theatre. We lost our last one in the late '80s -- now it's all multiplexes and stadium seats.
One of my favorite memories from childhood was the family going downtown to see a movie at the Metropolitan, one of the...
For whatever it's worth, I do it all the time. I have one fedora that I wear with a shirt-tie combination, and another stingy brim that can go with either shirt-tie or something more casual.
Of course, even shirt-tie might be too close to a "suit" for your office. I work in IT, and just...
Well, my computer science degree wouldn't do me a darn bit of good in 1926... :)
As much as I'd like to say "yes, without a second thought!" I'd have to pause. Most of my joy of the past comes with the benefit of hindsight. Those who say that "things were better back then" have a "now" to...
I recently scored a small batch of ties off of eBay, which I bid on specifically to add some narrower (2-3") ties to my meager collection. And, I'll be honest, I was inspired by Mad Men. Imagine my horror to find that I'm merely following a trend... :)
Wearing one of my new ties today, and I...
Great movie, criminally underappreciated. Ed Wood is my all-time favorite producer, said with absolutely no trace of sarcasm or irony.
Next in my queue is Cleopatra Jones, Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed-Up Zombies, and the legendarily-titled Rat Pfink a Boo Boo.
Not to mention how challenging it is to drive certain cars while wearing a hat. Even if I have enough room for the crown, the back of the brim hits the headrest, forcing me to sit slightly forward -- a position that gets very uncomfortable after twenty minutes!
Thanks for posting this article.
I only have two hats, and maybe a half-dozen ties... and it still takes me a while to choose. If anything, the hat is the easy part of the deal -- brown full-brim fedora when I'm wearing brown or green, and new black stingy brim for everything else.
