    Vintage Fabric and Notions

I know it can be really hard to find good fabric, particularly in the US. This may be stating the obvious of course, but Viscose is the same thing as Rayon, and certainly this is the name that seems to be more often used these days when labelling fabric. I always giggle at the way they...

    eBay prices

huh! I spend my time desperately trying to find sweaters that are not decorated. I hate beading. And sequins. I, too, can see this from both sides. I do find it interesting that people expect to be able to buy a vintage item of clothing for a fraction of what they would spend on a new item...

Where did your user name come from??

Incidentally, mine's another Domino Club nickname. The fact that it is entirely in capitals is AN ACCIDENT! But, I'm sure it says something about me, nonetheless.

Where did your user name come from??

Nice - I'd have sworn you pinched it from the wonderful film of the same name - but in fact, your name came first! Now, I'm wondering, does MK get his name from the JM Coetzee book (I've been assuming it is an erudite reference) or... is it just his name? I'm curious.

    The quality of a suit

plus, it's a lot easier to take trousers up, and dresses in, than down, and out. Particularly if you trim the new hems. So clothes that are handed down often get smaller over time.

    Funeral Attire...

This is going to sound a bit weird, but I think it's important not to 'upstage' the deceased person's family. I'd never go for top-to-toe black if I'm not close family because it makes you look like you're overdoing the mourning thing as a fashion statement. So yes, understated is good.

    Modern wedding gowns

Interesting. One of my friends, from a Polish family, at least the past 3 generations of her family have been married in pale blue. Did it used to be more common to do so, I wonder? Why that colour?

    Firming Cream

That's true. As I understand it, there are some prescription things which DO have an effect (peeling etc). But basically, if it did anything significant, it would be classified as a medicine, and you'd need to get it from a pharmacist. I somtimes steal some of my mother's expensive...

    What do you look like?

Well, you should be! Dear me, every self-respecting chap ought to smoke a nice healthy pipe at least once a day... ;)

    Little Black Dress

I am a sleeve lover too! I particularly like bishop sleeves or sleeves cut straight and wide, because they balance the tops of my arms and more importantly, stops my hands from looking... so huge. However, on the LBD front, not luck. I look ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE in black. It certainly does not...

    Firming Cream

Oh dear! I'm afraid (and I'm going to say this very quietly) I don't even use moisturiser But you've just reminded me of an awful occasion where, after being drenched in a sudden downpour, and then spending, oh, about an hour arguing to try to gain access to a library in Paris (with...

    Show us your vintage home!

p.s. my house was built in 1969. It has many period features. But, I suspect, it would not*be appreciated by the FL. One day, I would love to have a 30s house.

MissJoeri, nice film. I LOVE your sofa with the shelves... Is it comfortable?

    Modern wedding gowns

So true! It seems the sole aim in the 30s was to make your bridesmaids look as awful as possible. Usually in pink or pale blue, with a Bo Peep bonnet... Thinking about it - I wonder if the thing was, that many, many weddings were not in the evening. If you had a morning wedding, you had a...

    Brecht and Weill

Yes, I read that before I posted the thread. Apologies, should I not have done that? There seemed not to be much reference apart from your review, hence my question. It sounds like an awful production, but I suppose those happen... I saw a wonderful one at the Donmar Warehouse in London, years ago.

Curious thought, I'd say. I had never made a connection. Though I do like Hardy.

    Thin ties...any thoughts?

The Old Town link is useful - thank you Salv. I shall send it to my mother so she can stop complaining about being able to find ties for my father (he wears them out - not sure how!) Fletch, I want ALL of yours.

    Modern wedding gowns

So true. I went to 4 weddings this year, and I have played in my swing band at a lot more -- and at all but one of them, the brides (whilst they looked lovely) were wearing the identical dress - strapless, corseted, smooth over the hips, flared skirt. On the larger lady this is not a good look...
