If I had to pick one girl from the golden era

Nita Naldi got my attention a long time ago. This picture also plays to my passion for shortwave and Ham Radio.

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

So my 15 year old daughter walks into the room tonight and asks me if I want to watch a Humphrey Bogart movie. I love it! Out comes Bogey and Ida Lupino in "High Sierra."

    Rifle Firing Position

Hmmm. I just found this thread for the first time. I'm sorry that I've overlooked it up until now. I enjoy riflery and am passionate about shooting known-distance and unknown distance with "off-the-rack" iron-sighted rifles. The old military standard was to shoot to 4 moa out to 500 yards...

    Show Us Your Oldest Books

I've collected books off and on for several years. The four volumes on the bottom are a printing of The Spectator from 1855. I also have a complete four volume set of The Tattler printed in 1804. The top volume in the picture is a biography of Philip Henry, the Father of Bible...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

"Up" Watched it with the kids. There's a lot to this animated film though...a lot. It's made for adults.

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Try the book Mae. Like many movies, the point and purpose of the novel on which it was based were forgotten when Hollywood got a hold of it.

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Like Miss Golightly, I haven't seen the remake. I'm not really interested in seeing it either. Robert Shaw, Walter Mathau, Martin Balsam...I'm not sure how you can beat that. Check them both out and make your own call. But, I highly recommend the 1974 version.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I couldn't agree with you more about the eggs. I still do it and I still save my drippings. I suspect that the drippings can is alive and well. People merely keep a low profile now in order to avoid being harassed by the 'health police.' Here's to the bacon underground!

    The Ernest Hemingway Thread

Connery. You have opened the door for me! Thank you...yes! and there is such a bravery on display as he faces what he believes to be imminent death. We are, among other things, being presented with a boy's first foray into manhood. Then when he is restored and realizes that he will not truly...

    The Ernest Hemingway Thread

Thanks HadleyH. This is going to eat at me. I'm convinced that there has to be something more. I'm trying to put myself in the author's mind knowing that writers choose words and create scenes and imagery with purpose...he just must have had more in mind. "You don't have to stay here with...

    The Ernest Hemingway Thread

I recently read E.H.'s short story "A Day's Wait" and I'm struggling with the theme here. I've searched the web and the standard interpretation seems to involve miscommunication, empathy, or concerning over trifling things. These are all elements in the story to be sure...but, there must be...

What was the last TV show you watched?

"Top Shot" Season 3. Though after seeing so many mention "The Wire" I'm curious about it. I've never seen it.

    Texas Flying Legends

Very lucky indeed! There were several other fly-overs that weekend most of which I missed with my camera. The picture that you commented on was taken on the third and final day that we were there. This time the planes, rather than taking off single file, came over the trees in a formation...

meditations on doing yesterday's music today

Thank you. I'm of the same opinion. However, I've never been able to express it so vividly. I'll add to your comments concerning rock music that for similar reasons it pains me to see Jazz turned into something studied and served to the Carnegie Hall set.

    Texas Flying Legends

I recently went camping in Wiscassett, Maine at a camp ground that is situated next to a small airfield. One morning I was taking some pictures when I heard what sounded like several prop planes coming right over the trees behind me. I looked up and snapped this picture: Over the next...
