    The Price of Thrift

£20 for a dress is hardly thrift store prices. When we talk thrift store we mean under £5. In the UK the prices for vintage/second hand are much more expensive in the states/canada. When i go home I'm always amazed at the price differences. Yes you can buy vintage dresses at £20...

    Across the Pond and Stuff!

SarahB is right. The shapeless smock with footless tights and flat shoes is all the rage in the UK. It's a great look if you are 17, thin and over 5"9. Otherwise you just end up looking like a blob! Tight jeans are all the rage as well. It's a shame really because it's a really hard...

    The Price of Thrift

It's such a shame but in the U.K. thrift stores just don't exist. Not like back home in Canada. In the UK they have charity stores but they only sell new or nearly new stuff. Never vintage. All the vintage stuff seems to go directly to vintage dealers where the prices are hiked up. I assume...

Thank you for all your kind words! I've bought some more fabric (different patterns) and I'm now going to make 2more dresses from the same pattern. Good pun by the way O'Hairas! Oh - goldwyn girl - where did you get that dress pattern for the wrap/hawaiian dress you are wearing? I'd...

    Soup's on...

I did a veg soup last week and threw in a large cut up, sweet potato. It turned out really nice. The sweet potato compleatly broke down and just gave a really lovely flavour and colour to the soup.

    Oh My!

:) Now I nearly fell out of bed when I read this! According to the book "The 1940's Look" by BROWN, Mike. On page 123 there is an article from the magazine "Home Companion" from 1943 which reads: "Slimming is dead as mutton and fourty-odd is the usual measurement given by service brides...

I finaly did it! My first dress in 10 years! Took me about a week in total, however I do have a knitting project on the go as well. I'm happy with it. What do you gals think? Here are the pics to prove it. I so need to go on a diet. This is me trying to re-create that famous pose that...

I agree with Lady Day, say a few foot of green at the bottom and then 1/2 foot on the ends of the sleeves. I think red would not work somehow. I could be wrong. Just perfect for lounging in, all you will need are fluffy mules/slippers and a full face of makeup and loads of...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

Poiret Dress Pattern OK, I've got a queston for all of you. I've looked all over the net for a reproduction Poiret Dress pattern. Somebody out there must have done them or is doing them now. Perhaps not as "Poiret" but calling them something else? Have any of you come accross anything...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

Cheers, I'll go down to the market and pick up a pattern from the sewing stall this week. I think I'd be able to find a modern shirt dress pattern especially as they are very popular in all the clothes shops at the moment. Cheers! Vanessa

Lady Day, I've just looked through this whole thread again and I have to say the fabrics you choose are just amazing. I love how you use contrasting lining fabrics - like little floral print patterned fabric or checked. I love it!! It's an idea that I intend on stealing!:D

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

I've dug out my machine... It's been years since I've sewn anything but I found my machine in the loft (thought I got rid of it actually, so I was very surprised to see it) I made a skirt last weekend, and now I think it's time to try my hand at a dress. What vintage style dress would...
