    favorite director of all time?

I don't know that I'd call O Brother Where Art Thou the best film of the last 20 years but I agree that it is immensely watchable. It's in my personal top 5 or 10. That said, Charlie Chaplin is my pick. I'm blown away every time I rewatch something. To end, Bicycle Thieves is the finest film...

WTB Medium Weight Wool Suit for My Wedding this Spring

Thanks for the tip. I'm not disinclined to wearing a tux, its just that everybody else is dressing down. My fiancee is not even wearing a traditional wedding gown, more like a summer dress.

WTB Medium Weight Wool Suit for My Wedding this Spring

I'm getting married late in May, in a very non-traditional ceremony. Having trouble finding the right suit for me. Looking for something 40s, and I'm open to pretty much any colors. Any tips on where to look, in addition to Loungers looking to off-load a suit, would be much appreciated...

In Search Of: The Great Hot Dog Stand

I've never had one with just the mustard - I've always slopped on the relish, which makes it for me. I suppose if you aren't a relish fan, or want one without, it's much the same as most hot dog stands.

In Search Of: The Great Hot Dog Stand

Birch beer seems to be seasonal, I have no idea whether it's regional or not. This time of year you can usually find it.

In Search Of: The Great Hot Dog Stand

The best place I know of in Connecticut is Blackie's Hot Dog Stand in Cheshire. Granted, I don't think it looks like that anymore. Open since the 20's, they are very traditional. They are closed on Fridays, don't serve french fries. Their relish is the key (which can be ordered online!)...

    The Red Baron (2008)

Thank you Chas and Spitfire for your informative posts. I suppose if I knew more about Richtofen, maybe it would have bothered me more. I did scoff at the landing scenes between Richtofen and Joseph (Ralph?) Fiennes, portraying Brown, I think. That came across as hokey. Overall, I think the...

    CW Stoneking

Yeah, I noticed the CD on Amazon, but was looking for vinyl. Seems like a better listen that way. I actually only spent $4 more for the import from Germany, so it seems like somebody's hiking the prices. Oh well, I'll find it somewhere, I'm sure!

    The Red Baron (2008)

They have a large part of the cast from HBO's The Wire, it seems, so I expect at least a decent picture from it. Why does everyone dislike Red Baron? Because of its gross inaccuracies, or because they think its a bad picture? I watched it from an entertainment standpoint and was not let down...

    CW Stoneking

Old thread, I know. But, I just discovered C.W. over the past week and immediately searched around and ordered his first LP King Hokum from Germany! If anybody knows a place to get the LP of his second album Jungle Blues, let me know. Anybody who missed this thread the first time, should...

    The Red Baron (2008)

I'll admit to not knowing much about airplanes or Richtofen, so I'm not a great reference. I enjoyed mostly the costuming, and I quite liked the lead actor, although he seems to have gotten mixed reviews. I'm about half-way through the Blue Max, but c'mon? George Peppard makes the worst lead...

    The Red Baron (2008)

I just watched Der Rote Baron the other day - I enjoyed it although pretty much none of it was true, and the director should have shown some restraint (dropping a garland into an open grave from a fighter plane?). Anybody else see it? Also, the actor who plays Manfred Von Richtofen, is his...

Video games based in the golden era

To revive an older thread: L.A. Noire is in fact set to release this year on the PS3 and 360. They have kept development quite secret, because of the new technologies they are working on. Supposedly, they've developed a method by which they can record an actor from multiple angles and output...

    Film Noir?

As I suggested above, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is a great mystery/comedy/neo-noir that came out a few years back. It's one of my favorites. I'll definitely have to check out that book, Nathan, thanks for the suggestion!

    Film Noir?

Thematically, I've always considered it squarely within the boundaries of Noir, even if the visual style may not be. Regardless, it's a great detective story made during the heyday of Film Noir, and should not be missed.

    Flame and Citron

Somewhere deep in my sub-conscience I remember hearing about Max Manus. It looks good! Reminds me of a more action-packed The Wind That Shakes The Barley. Still have not seen Flame and Citron - will post my thoughts on it when I do.

    Film Noir?

Best Noir, Period. I don't know if you are still looking for suggestions, but my favorite noir is The Thin Man. It simply cannot be beat. It's actually quite hilarious, and remains funny 75 years later. It seems that the contemporary Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang styles itself after the William Powell...

    Flame and Citron

Has anybody seen this one yet? Here's the synopsis posted on Rotten Tomatoes: "In this thriller set in World War II-era Copenhagen, two men put everything on the line in their fight against the Nazis." The film, directed by Ole Christian Madsen, stars Mads Mikkelsen, probably best known as...

    Vintage Eyeglasses

You might check out the Moscot Originals collection. They carry several frames that look similar to those found during this time period. The Miltzen frame is even described as first being introduced during the 30s. Here is a link to that frame.
