The registered trademark symbol places it no earlier than 1946, I believe, though I don't know when it entered common usage.

Correct; the Lanham Act of 1946 established modem U.S. registered trademark law. Prior the that, the U.S. PTO issued trademarks going back to the 1870s, but application of trademarks was not standardized. One of the provisions of the Lanham Act was who could and could not use the "circle R" (only the Principal Registerer, I belive). However, I'm not sure if the circle R predates Lanham.

This one came up a while ago and it was agreed that it was 40s or early 50s.

The logo has been seen frequently in those ads
