Rusty, I'm a big fan of Orvis. Their HQ is located in Roanoke, VA which is about 90 mi. southwest of my hometown. I discovered them after relocating to TX over 25 years ago.

I have the TR Vest, Rough Rider Shirt, and bandanas but I never wear them together.

A lot of this year's Christmas gifts are coming from Orvis.

CampDraft for sale

I thought I'd let everyone know in this thread that I'm putting a brand new silverbelly campdraft size 58 in the classified section.

for some silly reason, I thought that it would be more silver, but it's more a sand color, Nice, the color just doesn't look right on me.

I paid $190(usd) for my Fed IV and the Campdraft w/ the fast shipping. I'm just looking for $95 for it having it shipped to you. I am going to loose too much money shipping it back to make it worth while returning it.

Thanks.

I am a 7 1/4 ~ 57.5 if anyone has something else, I'd definitly be intersted in a trade.

PM me if you want more info, etc.

Thanks,

Rob

Grey Campdraft Special Order: Now I understand

Earlier in this thread was a cluster of posts about the prospect of getting enough people together to get an Akubra vendor (e.g., Everything Australian or Hats Direct) to place a special order for Campdrafts in grey. A few days ago I stumbled across the Baron Hats website. Baron Hats claims to have made many hats for films, including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Another film they claim they did is "Seabiscuit." When I saw their web page of the hat Jeff Bridges wore, I sort of flipped:

They call this hat the Entrepreneur, and you can see that it's sort of an uber Open Road, right down to the wind trolley. It has a 3" bound brim and 5-1/4" *creased* crown height. But it's pretty expensive--$350 for their "fur felt" and $430 for their 100% beaver.

So yeah, now I understand. It would be very nice if Akubra did a run of Campdrafts in moonstone, or an even lighter grey. At one time they made hats in a color called "sky grey." This hat is what I imagine sky grey would look like.

I was under the impression that the Seabiscuit hat was a vintage, 2 5/8" brim hat provided by Art Fawcett. But perhaps there were several hats made for Jeff Bridges' character.
The text on the site is a bit hard to follow:

In the case of “SEABISCUIT”, this had an extra layer of detail added, since the characters in the story were based on actually people, and there were many photographs and newsreels of them taken in their day where very specific style hats.

I can't tell if they're claiming to have made the hat or not.

But I agree, I'd love a light gray Campdraft...

Its my understanding Art still has the hat he provided.
And Barons made hats for the crowd shots.

I'll buy that; notice I was only passing on what Baron said, but he did dance around the issue of whether he actually made Jeff's hat.

But the real point is (and my hat's off to Art), that is a GORGEOUS hat, and I'd love to see Akubra make a Campdraft in light grey.

For those with more funds and refined taste, Art's rendition of this hat would be the ultimate.

Thanks for the "after the fact" advertisment on the Tawny Fawn Campdraft. I ordered that one about a month and a half ago, but ended up on back order. I started to question whether my money could be spent better elsewhere ( read: another hat ), but decided to let it ride. Boy, your pictures make me glad I did! I'm looking forward to getting it around the end of the month/ early next. The only downside is I put the order in before the exchange was most in my favor. Ahh...I guess it can't hurt to throw a little more scratch in the direction of quality hats [huh] .

An aside to the Baron's thing:
Anyone who keeps up with the goings on at COW ( and I believe it was touched on here, as well ) is aware of what seem to be some "odd" claims coming out of that establishment ( like they made the hats for IJ IV ). The twisted intrigue in the cut throat world of hats.

Kiltie, You'll be glad you waited. You might check with the vendor and see if they applied your payment when you ordered or if it is applied when the hat ships.

I have a question, too. What is the open crown height of the Campdraft? The only measurement I could find (on the Everything Australian website) said it was 10.5 cm or 4.12", which I don't believe at all. I assume that is the height of the crown as bashed in the picture they provide. But in the pictures I've seen of it open crowned, it looks much higher, at least as tall as a Federation. How do they compare in reality?

That is definitely not right. I own a Campdraft, but not a Federation. I own a couple of Art Fawcett hats that are 5.5" and 5.75" open crown. Compared to those I would say that Camdraft is in the 5.75" range.

Does anyone know if Akubra are going to begin making green Campdrafts again?

If one can get a petition together and have enough people sign on, I believe Akubra will make a run of a hat in any color. As far as I know, however, the bluegrass green Campdrafts have been discontinued.
