Akubra hat like the Squatter but with wider brim

Dear Loungers,

I am looking for a tuff rugged hat ideally by Akubra, in the style of the Squatter, but with a wider brim.

I currently own two Akubra Squatters in steel grey and deep fawn respectively, but the brims simply aren't wide enough for me. I have a preference for:

Brim: 83 mm Crown height: 11cms, 4 ",

and the Squatter falls short of this at. Brim: 73 x 76mm

The crowns also taper a little making the hats look small on my head. I have an Akubra Coober Pedy and Bushman and the brim sizes on these measure 83 mm. I live in a very hot sunny country so anything under 83mm simply doesn't cut it.
Can anyone recommend an Akubra that fits the bill - Fedora style with a wide brim of 83mm (3 1/4") or bigger, that can be worn with a suit.

By the way I will be listing my Akubra Squatters in the Classifieds section of the forum if any Loungers are interested. They are both a size 60. Both hats have been bashed a few times but only the deep fawn Squatter as actually ever been worn out for a short period of time.

Check out the Akubra website, they give the dimensions of all their hats.........just one thing though, Akubra does make a few fedora type hats but the wider brimmed Akubras are 'outback ' styled hats & not fedoras. If you really want a wider brimmed fedora then prehaps buying a vintage fur felt cowboy hat & then styling it to your tastes would be a better option. Many folks on this forum have done just that & have made some stunning conversions.

Not sure of what you want in style, but EA gives good specs for brims. Here is their main Akubra page:

I have hyperlinked a few particular hats which seem to fit what you are saying:

The closest to your description is the Plainsman, but the biggest brim is the Riverina.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all of your responses. I am leaning towards the Riverina, but I wish it had a bound edge. I've got it in my head that hats with bound edges are more durable.

One of my first hats had a raw edge and it has held up for decades. But we all have our preferences and I think that a bound edge looks sharp.

With your preference for the bound edge, the Tablelands might be the one. Meets the minimum brim size and has the bound edge. I like the brown olive color which seems to be readily available in your size.

The Territory and Riverina both have 102 mm brims, which are quite a lot wider than your preferred 83 mm brim width.
I have a Territory, and it is one really thick and stiff hat, nothing at all like any of my three Squatters.
I have heard tell that the Riverina is made of the same sort of felt as the Territory.

So why won't it do?
Too narrow a ribbon?
You can always replace it, or put a pugaree over it, as I did, so that you can always easily go back to the original ribbon.

I wouldn't have a clue about replacing it, and there aren't any stores in the UAE that can do this. You'd be surprised how much attention I draw just for wearing a hat.

the Akubra lightning ridge hat and the overlander may work. They both have crown heights around 4.5 inches, i was just looking at them. You could wear either one with a suit these days. I believe the overlander has a slightly larger brim. Both of those are from the heritage collection. The Gymkhana is another awesome hat, it has a pretty large rim but is less formal. Their snowy river hat is another option, I saw some pictures of guys wearing them in suits and it didn't look half bad.

Sold only in the U.S.A., Australian-made Akubra Adventurer (different hat from Australian-sold Akubra Adventurer).
Considerably lighter weight and softer felt than any other Akubra that I own, including three Squatters, two Bushmen and a Sydney.
5-5/8" open crown
3-1/8" x 2-3/4" raw edge unbound brim
1-1/2" grosgrain ribbon with bow
$160.00 http://www.davidmorgan.com/product_info.php?products_id=1128
$142.95 http://www.kakadutrader.com/1632.html
$128.99 http://culturedcowboy.com/hats/DavidMorgan/pages/akubrahats2.htm

There's at least one thread somewhere on this forum with rather explicit instructions and photographs of how to make a hatband with a bow.
I would think that most any competent tailor or seamstress should be able to do this.
Sewing on a length of ribbon to make a bound brim edge should be even easier.
