It should be noted that AE and Alden never occupied the top rung of US makers back in the day, as they do now. It's not like their quality has slipped; they make them today just like they always have. It's brands like J&M and Florshiem that have slipped from the top rung to the bottom.

Mr. Lyles, I could not have stated it better. 100% agree with this assessment. When people think of Alden & Ae as "top US shoemakers" they are selling the Vintage marketplace as well as the modern one short.
