Bespoke Luget Bros. Overcoat

I recently acquired a very nice dark navy blue herringbone pattern double breasted overcoat, bespoke made (for a Mr Simpson in 1938 I might add!) with a wasp waist. It's very heavy (wool Im guessing) and reaches down to midway between my calves and ankles. It is, to be fair, a little tight on me
I was wondering, was this particular kind of wasp waisted overcoat designed to be worn with a jacket underneath, or just a waistcoat?

Incredible as it may seem, these overcoats were designed to be worn with a jacket underneath. Fortunately, the jackets from your overcoat's era were wasp-waisted too, so it all worked out.
