Quite ironically I just came across this photo on the Ask Andy forum.

The black waistcoat studs and patterned pocket square aren't classic but the grosgrain lapels and boiled shirt sure are. That even appears to be a detachable collar - very impressive!

Ah, but they are classic. Stud sets with black onyx or black enamel were indeed worn with white waistcoats, as long as those waistcoats were used with tuxedos. It was considered very gauche to wear white mother-of-pearl studs with a tuxedo -- and this includes waistcoat studs.
