The buttonholes on men's shirts are oriented vertically, all but the last one, the bottom one, which is often oriented horizontally. Why? Please and thank you.

    They are Men's Shirts.
(If you know as to what I am referring.)

The two buttons that receive the most stress during wear are the collar and bottom buttons. The horizontal buttonhole will take the strain without distorting and allowing the button to come undone.

    Thanks, Nick. That makes sense.

My original thought was that it would be easier to fasten due to the location, never even recalling the collar area.
    LOL.
Then again, when button flies were the norm, only a regular, vertical orientation was used.

Often thought this... just presumed, as 30 did, that it was easier to operate... as usual the simplistic explanation is the answer...

Horizontal keyhole buttonholes were typical on button flies. Angled buttonholes were also used.

Another memory fail for me; after all, it was more that 60 years ago since I was wearing a buttoned fly!
