I ordered something recently; it was shipped via DHL, and German customs held and inspected the package. The seller had already taken care of the customs duties and VAT, though. Still, they did a random check to see what was inside the package.
A while ago, a friend of mine received a leather jacket as a gift. Customs stopped it, estimated its value, and then charged customs duty on it.
Often it goes well, but if you're unlucky, it doesn't.

If the declared value is significantly lower than the actual value, it’s also a real bummer from an insurance standpoint if the package gets lost

Wow, I had no idea DHL actually did that. I'm not surprised though, DHL clearly made a business model out of the customs / tarriffs situation. They now charge €19,50 handling fees.

Anyway, I guess I'm a very lucky guy. I've imported dozens of jackets, always omitting VAT or import fees by declaring $5 value. I do avoid shipping with DHL like the plague, I'm sure that helps a lot lol.

One of the reasons I have unfortunately stopped buying from the UK. Fortunately some shops like Walker Slater are really helpful, I recently had to return them an overcoat and they could provide (at your cost) a return label with all the customs/vat mess taken care of.

Figured I should share a few pics of my J-24 style test jacket (serial #12) from Cherubim. I still need to take a few more photos of the two tone Ton Up single rider that I also purchased from AerGuitar.

IIRC, this J-24 style jacket was made up in a 3.5oz steerhide. After a couple days of wear and some hide massaging sessions, it's softened up nicely already. The jacket is my first cross zip and surprisingly non-restrictive, given how trimly that it fits. Another extremely satisfied Cherubim customer here.

Sorry...I should have taken a fit pic of the back too. It was made without an action back. I think that AerGuitar prefers that pattern on his personal jackets, so that it has a little trimmer silhouette.
