Perhas a little beyond FL's usual date range, but does anyone know much at all about "Dandy, King's Road"? I picked up a gorgeous double-breasted, grey, peaked-lapel suit in as-new condition from a charity shop for £10 and was trying to date it as it was in such perfect condition I figured it might even be new.

It has two labels, one simply saying "Made in Italy" and the other saying "Dandy, King's Road, Chelsea". A Google search for that reveals two articles which suggest this came from a pretty hip shop owned by Darcy Bussell's dad, where the Beatles used to get kitted out in the late 60s:

Has this label been revived? Or have I snagged something from the brief period from (if that article is correct) 66 - 68, designed by the guy that kitted out Lennon, Bowie and Hendrix?

It's mentioned very, very briefly in an article in the Chap Magazine ,autumn 2006 on Tommy Nutter as one of the few really hip shops in London, in the swingin sixties.

I'll Lock Up
Lloyd Johnson/"Johnson's Modern Outfitters", 406 King's Road.

Oooh, indeed.

Maybe slightly off topic but in a similar, excitable vain... and perhaps a
good place for me to get excited.

There may be some connection then, with Lloyd Johnson,
of, eventually, "Johnson's Modern Outfitters", 406 King's Road(est. 1978)- and also at Kensington Market... who was also outfitting the '60s Rock World and beyond.

(Apparently- "Stones, Bowie, The Who, The Pretenders, The Clash and Tom Waits to Iggy Pop, The Cramps, Lords Of The New Church, Generation X, Primal Scream, The Cult (Billy Duffy even worked at the shop at one time!), The Smiths (yes, Johnny Marr used to buy from us when he worked at X Clothes), Transvision Vamp (yup, bassist Dave worked for us as well before he went on to Bush), Paul Weller, Elvis Costello, George Michael, Rupert Everett and even Liza Minelli, Bing Crosby and Samantha Fox! to name several")

I lived in London, for many years and often visited this shop but it closed
(must have been) in 2000, due to the lengthy stay of hip-hop(style) and diminishing youth interest in classic menswear styles- and soaring Chelsea rents. He also had a short-lived shop in Notting Hill, complete with bamboo and sea grass Tiki Record bar.
I spent a bunch at his closing sale. He had his own brands such as Johnson's Modern Outfitters, La Rocka, R&R Suicide and carried many of the famous American and Japanese brands of repro vintage and '50s clothing.
Lloyd also had a vast collection of vintage ties and was designing shirts for BC Ethic, which he continued, after closing the shop. Also known for promoting Vince Ray.
There I was in the shop, trying on a pair of trousers and Marianne Faithful wandered in- she assured me that the pants fit.

See more on that same site-
