Anyone interested in 1930s long distance air-racing and record setting (and aeronautical technology development) and is in the UK in June may be interested that the Comet Racer Project Group in Derby is hosting a Project Open Day on 14th June (1.00pm - 4.00pm) at Derby Airfield, Egginton.

Thiis is in support of the project to put the first DH88 Comet Racer 'Black Magic' back in the air we are hosting 2 open days during 2009. The significance of the DH88 is that in some ways it was to the DH Mosquito what the S series of trophy racers was to the Supermarine Spitfire. IMO the DH88 is one of the most charismatic aeroplanes ever and, although it never fulfilled its true potential, its exploits (especially in the hands of the legandary Amy Johnson) deserve a wider exposure.

I attended the last open day in May and found it fascinating. Throughout the day visitors are given a guided tour of the facilities and can see the restoration work. in progress. Members of the project answer questions.

I can recommend it as a good day out.
