Really hard to answer without more info about the Dobbs. That being said, a Stetson Royal DeLuxe went for $12.95 in the late 50's. I don't know how Dobbs lids were priced relative to that, but it may not be a bad benchmark. If the Dobbs were more of a Royal Stetson quality, then that would move things into the 60's.

That's about right, JtL. As we've discovered, Hat Corp. and Stetson prices mirrored each other pretty closely. Hat Corp. switched from $**.00 and $**.50 to $**.95 pricing sometime in the late '50s, though I haven't pinned down a date yet. That's almost too late of a date for my research.

"Fifth Avenue"

The Adam hats in my inventory labeled "Fifth Avenue" quality are younger than most of my hats. In fact, they are all pork pies.

It seems like the term "Fifth Avenue" was intended to imply a certain level of quality or style. I know that is pretty obvious (considering Saks 5th Avenue is still going strong), but I think Fifth Avenue was a term dreamed up by Madison Avenue.

On the other hand, all of my Lee hats were marketed as Lee Fifth Avenue, and I'm pretty certain that the Lee hats date back to the early to late 1950s.

I don't have much experience with Dobbs. Did they always use Fifth Avenue in their brand name?

When did the "Fifth Avenue" trend take off? Would that help date the hat?

I have always believed/assumed that "Dobbs Fifth Avenue" is the actual full name of the manufacturer. That is the name on the crown liner logo of my Dobbs hats. As far as model names, I have, for instance, two Dobbs Fifth Avenue hats that are denoted as "Hanover Square" models on the sweat band in the area where you might read "Stratoliner" on a Stetson.
