Experience with Mushmans

Hi all,

Hope the weekend was good to you.

This is my second "does anyone have any experience with X brand" this week, so bear with me. I'm looking for alternatives to RMC, RC, Flat Head, etc and I know Mushmans does their own original pieces as well as collaborations.

Does anyone have any experience with Mushmans leather jackets? Does anyone know who makes their original pieces? They seem like terrific quality and the company seems very immersed in the world of leather.

Your thoughts are appreciated as always, thank you. Looking forward to speaking with you soon.

I know Jake (@dudewuttheheck) owned a Mushmans A2 some time back. Sadly, I learned that he takes a break from TFL for personal reasons, but you can hit him up on his Insta (Almost Vintage Style), and I am sure he will gladly share his 2 cents.

I was quickly perusing the list of threads, and I could've sworn I saw "Experience with Mushrooms"! :)

Thank @Tom71 I appreciate it - you're right, Jake has some experience and it's too bad that his YouTube is now shut down. I'll try him on Instagram and see what he says. Thanks for the tip.

They are contracting with the best makers in Japan. What more is there to say.

I didn't order from Mushmans directly, but I did acquire this jacket from them on the second-hand market:

This is a limited edition white version Rio Grande model from 2020. Sewn by Electic Leather Studio consisting of Himeji white (cream) horsehide and genuine Chimayo panels provided by Trujillo.

As others have mentioned, Mushmans seems to do a fair amount of work with Electric Leather Studio. I have no complaints about the construction, but I'm also not obsessive about stitch count, so my standards are probably lower than others. That being said, the shoulder, P2P, and sleeve length were within 0.25" of the posted dimensions on their web site, and the body length within 0.5". Given tolerances I would consider this to be acceptable.

You can follow the hyperlinks to read about the story behind the development and this particular jacket on Mushmans blog. Considering it's only one of five in existence (sizes 34, 36, 38, 40, and 42), and one of one in my size I feel very lucky to own it and have no regrets getting it.

@TheOldFashioned that jacket is so very cool, wow, I love it! You'll likely literally never see another person wearing it - how is it aging? Is the cream horsehide going to darken over time - like a Mr. Freedom Campus jacket - or is it dyed cream?

Either way it's really beautiful. How did you get it? Did you see it on their website or happen to be in their store right-place-right-time sorta thing?

Overall I'm really pleased to hear that Mushman's is so well thought of and that they create such beautiful and well-constructed pieces, thank you all!

I've had the jacket for less than a year, and it's been worn in rotation, so in a sense I'm still just breaking it in. I don't think it received much wear prior to coming to me, though, because the horsehide was/is still pretty stiff. I acquired it via the second-hand market in Japan using a proxy service. I had been watching it passively for a few months, but after I really started digging into the backstory I crumbled pretty quickly. The opportunity to own something pretty unique was too good to pass up.

I'm sure exposure to (UV) sunlight will have some affect (as is sunlight on pretty much anything), but overall it shouldn't darken. Definitely not like a MF Campus jacket, or any natural/raw hide for that matter. My understanding is that during the tanning process it's exposed to the sun and slowly dried for several months and this a key contributor to achieving the milky white color, so no, it's not dyed nor pigment finished.

Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, both with the white leather and the wool panels, but I dig it.

Electric Leather Studio made a few as others have said. Rainbow Country and the Few have also made some. Bill Kelso also made a couple.

From my understanding, Mushmans is not a brand like Rainbow Country or Freewheelers. It is more like a department store like Neiman Marcus or Barney’s New York. While both brands and department stores can contract out work to an OEM, the difference is that department stores work with multiple OEMs while brands work with one OEM. But that’s besides the point, JP-made stuff is top notch if it’s a well recognized brand.

I've worked with a few Mushmans pieces in the past, and the metal, leather, and stitching all feel pretty good. They have a timeless, well-considered style that is similar to RMC or Flat Head, though I'm not sure who actually makes their originals.
