Description: For sale is a remarkable piece of history—an authentic late 1930s double-breasted car coat in likely horsehide. This jacket is absolutely awesome - heavy leather with a super warm lining.
Condition: This vintage gem exhibits some wear, as expected for its age (the jacket is most likely near 90 years old) attesting to its rich history. I have taken pictures of the most significant areas, but there is no significant leather damage to be found. Some modifications may have taken place, including the removal of belt ends and possible sleeve lapel pieces. A few loose stitches at the end of one cuff are present (as pictured) but rest assured, there is no major damage. The jacket remains completely wearable, showcasing its resilience over the decades.
Features:
-Leather-lined interior sleeve openings
-Likely moleskin cloth sleeve lining
-Fabric-lined heavy duty pockets (all intact) and belt underside showcase thoughtful craftsmanship.
-The jacket boasts an amazing heavy-duty plaid-style wool lining in excellent condition.
-Intricate pattern work on both the front and back, featuring four front pockets, typical of these amazingly crafted old car coats
-Almost without a doubt all original heavy duty buttons remain in place
Really amazing details that show how well crafted these old jackets were. Modern makers replicate these features on reproductions, but here’s your chance to own a beautiful original.
Historical Significance: Originally sold for premium prices, these jackets were a symbol of luxury and functionality in the 1930s. Owning one today is a connection to a bygone era, an opportunity to carry a piece of history with you.
While the jacket is unlabeled, the features and design exhibited in this piece are quite consistent with American made car coats from the late 1930s. Based on extensive research, I am reasonably confident this is American made and it is very well likely late 1930s.
Details:
Material: Heavy-duty horsehide (based on my estimation)
Style: Double-breasted car coat
Era: Late 1930s (most likely)
Wear: Some wear, consistent with age
Modifications: Belt ends removed, possible sleeve lapel piece removed
Condition: Completely wearable, no major damage
Price: I have priced this jacket quite reasonably, with both the thought of its rarity and wearable condition, while acknowledging that some modifications are likely to have taken place.
Please note that I do my absolute best to exhibit the jacket as you will receive it. If there is any doubt as to condition or measurements, please reach out directly and I will be happy to answer questions or provide additional photos.
This is one of the oldest jackets I’ve handled, and some wear is to be expected that I cannot fully capture in all the photos. I have highlighted the most extensive damage, and any other areas are relatively minor when dealing with a 90 year old jacket. Again, if you have any questions about condition, reach out directly.
This beautiful, heavy duty jacket will be shipped out quickly upon payment. Please note I have done my best to capture the actual measurements of the jacket (as pictured and listed below). If there is any question as to sizing, please reach out directly.
Armpit to armpit: 22”
Shoulder to shoulder: 18”
Sleeve length taken straight from shoulder seam: 26”
Length from bottom of collar to back: 34”
Front drop: 1”
Please consider the thick horsehide leather when considering how this jacket will fit. I’m selling this one cause the length is just a bit too long for me (I’m about 5’8).
Note - the hat and scarf are not included in the sale.
Price is $275 shipped in the continental US (PayPal friends and family).
