Made by Bates before the company became synonymous with military and law enforcement footwear, this is a superb quality wingtip. When this shoe was introduced in 1953, it quickly became the subject of much more than footwear discussion.
The Phi Bate, is an obviously a play on the shortened name for Phi Beta Kappa. Meant to appeal to college men, it is the only shoe ever endorsed by the College Board. Phi Beta Kappa national contemplated filing suit against Bates for use of the term Phi Bates. Counsel decided that success in court was unlikely, and dropped the threat. It is an interesting history for a rare, extremely well-made shoe.
This Phi Bates is in wonderful vintage condition. There is no wear to the uppers, and the soles and heels have absolutely minimal wear. The threads on the sole are still visible and intact. It is fully leather lined, with a leather sole and rubber heel. Asking a measly $60 plus actual shipping.
