As customary, I will be going live at 11am EST for Fedora Friday #3 while wearing my Stetson bowler (derby) from the 1930's. In today's episode, we are going full 1931 — rain-slicked streets, shadowed brims, and fedoras so sharp they could cut glass. Our focus? The hats of Road to Perdition (2002), where Tom Hanks proves that a well-blocked fedora is as deadly as a Tommy ***, Paul Newman makes his fedora look like royal regalia, and Jude Law shows us why an open crown hat can be scarier than any mobster in a three-piece suit. So press in those crown dents, dust off those ribbon bands, and join us as we follow the hat trail on the Road to Perdition. Because in this world, there are only two kinds of people: those who wear hats… and those who wish they did.

Mark your calendars, hat lovers—it is time for another round of "Hat Tuesday", tomorrow at 11am EST and this one is bringing serious European flair. We are joined by none other than Steve Heck (@mayserwegener), Fedora Lounge regular and walking encyclopedia of fine German & Austrian headwear. From the precision of Mayser to the alpine elegance of Habig and beyond, Steve knows the crown dents, brim sweeps, and felt finishes that make these hats legends. Expect stories, history, and maybe even some jaw-dropping pieces from his collection that will make you want to yodel in pure hat joy. Why tune in? Because if you have ever wondered why European felts have that unmatched character—or you just love a good hat story—this is your episode. Do not miss "Hat Tuesday #4: Steve Heck on the Hats of Germany and Austria". Bring your questions, your curiosity, and of course… your best hat.

Quick update: So far only 3 votes have been cast for Fedora Friday #4 and Lawless (2012) is currently in the lead followed closely by Miller's Crossing (1990). You only have about 2 more days left to cast your vote so use the link above to do so before the poll closes.

A huge thanks to those of you that joined us for Hat Tuesday #4 today featuring our very own Steve Heck (@mayserwegener). If you could not make it to the livestream then you can always watch (or even re-watch) the show at your convenience. Now, I have more good news ... I am going live again tomorrow but this time at noon EST (instead of our usual 11am EST time slot) to bring you "Hat Chat #27"! In this episode, we are thrilled to welcome Robert Gault (@belfastboy). Robert is the founder of Wolfbrae Custom Hatters located in Vancouver, Canada. Robert’s journey is the kind of story every hat enthusiast loves—he only began making hats a few short years ago, yet he has already earned respect not just for his craftsmanship, but for mentoring and inspiring other hatters along the way. That is right: he has gone from student to guide in record time. Expect insights into the creative process, the challenges of building a name in today’s hat world, and what it means to pass along tradition while still being relatively fresh to the craft. If you love hearing from people who live and breathe hats, this is an episode you do not want to miss.

Thanks. I will focus on Echter / Real Velour production in Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia (Post WWI) from the late 1800s up to the 1930s.

Steve; Thanks for speaking to your European hat collection. Listening to the finished YouTube I was struck by the wet brushing expertise the hat workers had. I have admired those characteristics from afar over the years. I have a better understanding this afternoon of your "shiny" hats in your collection. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Luke for sharing Steve's hats and allowing him to share his collected knowledge.

Cheers, Eric -

Thank you, Eric. I am glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. I had a very similar reaction after seeing so many of Steve's hats but not knowing enough about the manufacturing process behind them until today. You are welcome to join us anytime as either a guest or a show participant. Cheers!

Eric, Thank you! I was struggling with the OBS software so I lost my train of thought too often. :)

On today's Fedora Friday #4 episode at 11am EST, we are heading straight into the moonshine-soaked world of Lawless (2012) — where the Bondurant brothers proved that a good fedora can take as much punishment as a Franklin County, Virginia bootlegger. Tom Hardy’s Forrest rocked a fedora so rugged and weather-beaten, it basically became a character of its own. That snap brim? Legendary. That worn-in felt? Pure grit. And let’s not forget the style clash when the slick city outsiders showed up with their “fancy” hats — talk about fedora drama! If you geek out over crown dents, brim snaps, ribbon choices, and a good backwoods patina, you do not want to miss this one.

Today at 11am EST, Fedora Friday #5 heads to Prohibition-era Chicago with The Untouchables (1987) — where Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, and Robert De Niro brought style, grit, and some of the sharpest fedoras ever put on film. From the wide-brimmed gangland silhouettes of Al Capone’s crew to the clean, upright crowns worn by Ness and his Untouchables, the hats tell the story of a city divided: corruption vs. justice, flash vs. restraint. Expect talk of brim widths, crown shapes, vintage ribbon treatments, and how 1930s hat fashion was brought to life in De Palma’s gangster masterpiece. We will even look at how the costume design made hats as iconic as the Tommy ***s they carried.
