Hi,
I recently picked up an H+L Block AN6552 and the original rayon liner seems to have been replaced with a thick wool period liner.
Has anyone heard of this being done by crewmen or did the manufacturer do this?

One clue would be that if the manufacturer s label is still there then the chances are that was a custom order.
(perhaps the Colonel s)
The other option being of course that the replacement lining was fitted by a local tailor to make the jacket warmer.
Flight gear was not as a rule subject to the regulations imposed on service uniforms ie. jacket art, crusher caps and so on,
so it could be possible that a crewman got his customised somewhere along the line.

Perhaps if you could post some decent pictures we could determine if it is a theatre replacement, post war addition or was originally part of the AN6552.
