Sorry about all that. I decided to do some cleaning up around my photobucket account, which caused many of my photo links on the lounge to break. I don't understand why some, but not all of them broke, as I've completely re-arranged, renamed, and privatized my photobucket account.

Douglas owns a felt hat company

After all these years, I now know that our fellow lounger owns a felt hat company :eusa_doh: . Here's the proof:

This ceramic ashtray shows the name of a felt hat shop in Batavia, the Dutch East Indies before 1942. Weltevreden is the name of an area in Batavia where the affluent Dutch and Chinese lived. The Chinese name seems to be the name of the proprietor, which was common during the old colonial days before world war II.

I found it amusing since there was demand for felt hats in the sort of warm weather we experience here. Perhaps it was cooler back then or that felt hats were worn when the Dutch went to the mountains for weekend retreats.

That's a new one on me, Lefty. Good find! I haven't run across anything about these hats before. What the devil does the "Flow" part refer to, I wonder?

Since Hat Corporation of America (not Hatco, BTW) is listed as the manufacturer, was this a line separate from Cavanagh/Dobbs/Knox etc., or was this a level of quality offered within those various brands? Gee, another mystery to solve!

Without any mention of the other brands, I think that it must have been its own, limited line. I wouldn't think that they'd have a $40 hat in each line - just the most expensive one. Based upon the average prices in the "dating vintage stetsons by price" thread, this hat would have been 3 to 4 times the cost of most hats, and still double some of the best hats. Could this have been around the same time that Stetson began to introduce the models named by price? Maybe these were intended to be the equal of the Stetson 50 for $10 less. I don't expect to find anything more on this hat any time soon.

I knew you'd call me on hatco, but I can't bring myself to type out the full name Hat Co. of Am. even now.

I noticed it does say "A Product of Hat Corporation...," which makes it sound like it is its own line. Since this was a new line, it's funny that they had to announce a limit to them shortly after establishing the line. And the name is really, really odd, unless these are some kind of ventilated hat.

Dobbs offered a $40 hat in 1944, and I'm sure Cavanagh would have too, though I haven't found the evidence yet, just making the logical leap. Cavanagh offered a $20 hat in 1941 that was "Beaver Quality," whatever that means.

Yep, it will probably be a while before we learn more about this. But it's been added to my investigation list.

We were both wrong on that point.

Soon after posting the above, I found an ad in the New York Times from 1945 for Beaver Flow hats by the F.R. Tripler store. I've got it in pdf right now, but I'll get it converted to a jpg today and get it posted. It does not include any other brand name, so Beaver Flow must have been the brand name, rather than a model.

I have seen this particular Knapp-Felt ad a couple of times, all in rather smallish copies. The only advantage they had, was that they were all much brighter and more colorful than the one Brad posted here, so I grabbed the picture and used Photoshop to try and bring some of the 'original' color back into the image.

Got this today, it's a cardboard standup display. Never heard of 'Longley Hats' before but the art is very similar to that in the 'Knapp-Felt' ads shown in this thread. Think the two companies are related?
