I was just wondering who might make hats (that are reasonably priced) that look like the one agent Handratty (Tom Hanks) wore in the film "Catch me if you Can". I saw many views of that hat, and thought that it would be nice to own one like it, so if anyone has any info as to where I might find one, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Mike!! Although I didn't see a hat that was the same style as the catch me if you can hat. I suppose I would have to contact dave brown and ask him about it. I figure if I did this, the cost of the hat would be really expensive...I just spent 235$ on an Adventurebilt hat, and really can't afford to spend that much again. I want to find something as close to the movie hat as I can for less than a hundred bucks. Maybe that's just a pipe dream, I don't know.

Strider,

Click on the "Clients" link on the left of the home page.

Then click on the "Tom Hanks" link. That will take you to some pix of the hat you're interested in.

According to Dave's price list, the hat will set you back by a least another $245.

Strider -- You could try www.villagehatshop.com and see if they have a similar hat. They have fur felt hats that you can buy for less than $100.

They sell standard hats plus they have their own line. I have a black Bogart hat from there that I got after I was inspired by Duce Apocalypse's Bogart hat. It set me back $84. They have a Cagney and lots of other hats. Don't know if you will find anything close to the Hanks hat or not, but you can take a look.

Art did the hats for a couple of the actors in "Catch Me If You Can". He still has costumes and hats actually used in this film..(as well as Seabiscut). The "stingy brims" from the 60's era are plentiful.

Brad,

You're not imagining things :D

I really liked the way that hat looked, I think that if I lose the feather in the ribbon, it will have a very close resemblance to "catch me...".

Is it my imagination, or is there a bit of a Cavanagh edge on that photo of the Stetson Saxon?

Brad

Brad, Here is what Stetson calls the edge.

Stetson Saxon - Royal Quality A nice, basic dress hat, the Saxon has a centredent crown and a grograin ribbon. A welt edge finishes its 2 inch brim

Brad i didn't think you would want it, besides the felt is crap!!

Not only that but the feather and that stetson logo has to go. It is gray so I would not worry too much about the color running---then again.... :kick:
Geez, I would prefer if Stetson would just make their edges like the old Playboys if they are going to stitch stuff down.
Let's face it, there are tons of stetson stingy brims out there fromt he 60s just crying out for a home. I bet you could find one on that auction site for a minimal amount of money with nice felt and probably a Cav edge. I just sent a green Dobbs out that set me back a whole $10 with shipping. :p What a nice hat that was.

Regards to all,

J

Oh, I'd never buy a modern Stetson! I was just excited at the thought of someone producing Cav edges again. I'm obsessing.

Beautiful Black Cav

A co-worker just brought in her dad's old hat for me to see. It's a beautiful black Cavanaugh, with the Cav edge, stingy brim with a two inch grosgrain ribbion, just like the style Tom Hanks wore in "Catch Me". It 's in perfect shape! and it came in the original hat box from Saks Fifth Ave, NY.

Wow, the felt on this baby is like butta'! It doesn't even look like it's been worn very much. No stains or moth bites, just perfect. The size is 7 5/8 for you big headed folks. ;) It fits me OK but the stingy brim just doesn't look very flattering on me.

Having said all that I'm surprised that my fingers got black on them from handling the hat. I'm surprised that this would happen by handling such an obvious high quality hat.

What's up with that?

Dave,

Yeah, I was surprised about the color coming off on my hands. I don't exagerate that the quality of the felt and the hat in general is awesome. I've got some nice hats but the felt on this Cavanaugh is amazing. Yet the color comes off on my hands.

Do any of you have any thoughts as to why the color on such a high quality hat would come off when handling it? The hat seems brand new, like it was hardly worn.

BTW, my friend at work decided to give me this hat, since her dad is gone and see could see that I really appreciate how good a hat it is. My sons who are really in to the stingy brim look really love this hat. Hey and my wife says I look 'cute' in it.
