I journeyed to NYC over the weekend and tried on a few at the Schott flagship store. I like 2 jackets very much and need help choosing between them. First is the Vandals jacket. Second is the 613sBlack. Which do you think?

Tbh they both look pretty good. On it's own, I do prefer the Vandal. Bold D-pocket
But gonna give the slight edge to the 613S based on fit.

I know it's not my place to ask, but aren't you supposed to be making crystal blue out of a van somewhere in the New Mexico desert?

Some pros and cons,

Vandals jacket very soft, comfortable, perfect weight, fitted. Not superthrilled with the multi-piece back, sleeve zippers on top.

613s black. Very badass, amazing chromexcel, boxier fit (may break in to fit better.) Very very stiff.

I also tried on their rancher jacket, 689h and 613 mos

Both look great on you, but to my eye the Vandals is the winner. I like the shorter back length and I’m partial to top sleeve zips.. probably can’t go wrong with either

If I were doing a Schott, I would go with their regular Perfecto in Horse Hide. The Vandals has a very nice back pattern, actually I quite like that, despite the fact that the leather looks like it has printed grain on it. Is there much of a price difference?

Just have to ask - did you shop the Vanson line as well? Some of them are much more attractive on price.

This will be shocking to some I suspect - I no longer want Horween CXL on a Leather jacket. So, the 613S would be out for me.

In terms of fit: Vandals. In terms of iconic appeal, leather, badass-ery - 613 all day, every day! Will only look better once the leather settles in a bit.

That's not a 613S; it's a P613S.

Go with the actual 613S (or SH for horsehide) because you can dial in the fit a lot more. The P613S is only available in S/M/L sizes so it's generally slightly off.

It is a new leather jacket that I figure will cost a " pretty penny." My primary concern when buying another jacket for any price , is how good and what characteristics does the leather have. As Alfonzo stated either jacket has very different types of leathers. Which type of leather do you like better and what qualities do you value?

Personally, with the cross zip style, I prefer the a more traditional and classic finish of the chromexcel. It is more in line with the "classic" finish from the cross zip and perfecto styles of the golden years of jackets. For jackets with a "soft and comfortable" finish , I save that for a more unique and "fashion". orientated maker like Leather Apparel of the 1970s. A fraction of the cost if you can find one, and far from a "classic look" and maker.

I like the murdered out look of the p613s. The chromexcel is pretty special and I like the tab that holds the buckle.

The buckle snap? I loathe it lol as do Monitor and a few others, but it seems that a lot of people like it and I can see the utility.

If you're committed to the P613S I would strongly consider you check out the burgundy version. The reason that jacket costs $500 more than a normal 613S is the Chromexcel leather, which is as expensive as it is due to its depth of color. By getting it in black, you're paying 50% more for the jacket for nothing!

If you want a black Chromexcel P613S with blacked-out hardware, get the 613MO instead. It has the snap you like, and the superior mitered buckle. It uses Chromexcel horse which is a far more expensive material at that, while being a hundred less.

But I'd still suggest you consider the 613S and especially the 613SH. The benefits you get from dialling in the fit are hard to beat, and Schott will happily switch out the chrome hardware for the black hardware at a minimal expense if you want. (I had them switch my buckle for the mitered buckle like you see on the MO.)
