Here is a question

I was talking to a friend of the family who said he was up north and talking to a native american hatter on an indian reservation.

The hatter told him that the felt he uses is 100% beaver belly and that the animals are shaved for their fur and kept in cages, not killed.

From what I have read in the past I thought the fur used for hats was under fur that required the removing of the skin to obtain.

My question is... do you have to kill the animal to make a hat?

Some animals are raised and harvested for their furs. Like chinchilla, mink, nutria, and even fox. To my knowledge, muskrat and beaver cannot be domesticated and raised on fur farms. There is an increased pressure on fur farms and even trappers by animal rights groups such as PETA, or perhaps it is PITA. Can't recall right now. They want all fur trade and manufacture to stop because it requires the animal to die. All of the info that I have access to says beaver must be trapped and killed for the underfur. It is possible to shave all of the belly fur off of the animal, but it could not survive in a cold weather scenerio with no protection. Sure, you could put it in a cage, but I doubt that it would flourish very long in capivity. Remember that prime furs, are taken in the winter, or after the animal puts on the winter coat. The fur is thicker, more dense at this time. Higher quality. Or that is the way it was when I trapped for extra spending money when I was a kid and teen. I have caught my share of coons, mink and a few beaver. We used to get around 30bucks for a prime beaver pelt. My brother would cook and eat the tale. This is one reason why beaver felt is so expensive. I got 30bucks for a beaver pelt in the 60s, and it takes around 1 pelt to make 1 hat. So the raw material is expensive in its raw form. The added value really escalates as this pelt moves up the production chain. But back to the shaved beaver. I guess it is possible, but to me improbable. Fedora

Yes

It's PETA People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

And I am a card carrying member!

LOL LOL LOL LOL

Ok, two Hail Marys for that one! HA.

No you have to kill the animal for the best fur. No two ways about it. Say,...has anyone had a beaver steak? So why waste the meat after harvesting the fur?

Are they edible?

Beaver is edible, but I have been told that the meat is quite greasy, like possum.

I always thought PETA was People for Eating Tasty Animals. I guess I'll have to change my opinion of them now :D

We do in fact, eat Pitas around here. I was quite fond of the Caesar Pita from Wendy's.LOL I just did some reading on the berserkers(PETA members), and they are one messed up bunch. Those folks must be from somewhere else in the universe. Here on earth, life lives on other life. Period. Unescapable. To go against that is true insanity. No matter how long I live, I will never understand how those folks think. I don't think you can actually call it sane thinking. Fedora

Hello boys! I couldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t agree more! I think animals are wonderful things. But, I also don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t believe that fur or meat is murder. Animals are here for men?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s use! It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s stated in the Bible that they were ordained for the use of man. What would happen if no one killed any animals? Well, there would be too many of them! To keep the population regulated, they need to be used.

Now, if there were guys making hats and coats out of dog and cat fur that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a different story. I believe that there are animals for pets and animals for fur and so on. But, I think that these animal rights people need to get a clue on a few things! And I speak of vintage fur! One time, I found a lovely 1930?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s over coat made of wool gabardine. The lapels and collars were made of a fake fur. But, it hung on the rack for months. Then, I thought I would buy it because the price came down a little then I saw why. One of these screwballs cut a hole in the fur! They ruined the coat!!!:rage:

So, these so called ?¢‚Ǩ?ìanimal rights activists?¢‚Ǩ? who I like to refer to as ?¢‚Ǩ?ìnut cases?¢‚Ǩ? don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t even know real fur from fake! Even if it was real fur it doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t matter! They damaged store property! And therefore they are considered vandals! It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s no longer exercising the right to express their ideas, its being reckless and having no respect. Also, the animal died 60 years ago! I say it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s time to get over it!!!

Cheers.
