Hi :D

I'm new. I've been reading various threads on the Lounge for a while now during my quest for a nice hat. I've just barely delved into the amazingly awesome world of dapper gents and their stylish lids. I'm 22 but have always been called an "old soul" and what not, due to my style of dress and stuff. Anyways!

I recently made a final decision on my first real hat, and I think I chose wisely with the Akubra Federation IV!! I just got it a week ago and have since put in my own bash! I was amazed how simple it was with a little practice and some steam.

So... what do you think? I tried to copy Bogey's Maltese Falcon bash and I am quite pleased with the results. How's the height of the crown? Should the ribbon be taller? Should I take a quarter inch of the brim?? [huh]

Welcome, and I've gotta say, that's a great fedora! Actually, I own the Federation IV too, it's the hat I'm wearing in my avatar currently. What color is yours, anyway? Moonstone or Carbon Grey? As for the crease, that looks to be quite accurate for Bogart's Maltese Falcon style.

BlueGem64, you chose well my friend. One of the best dressed men on the forum. Keep reading. Post some pictures, we all share the same love of hats.

I think you will find many more hats that can also compliment a gentleman's appearance and or be functional. It doesn't matter if you own one or one thousand hats, just as long as you derive satisfaction from them.

Welcome to the forum and hope to read more of your exploration into this appreciation of fine hats.

It looks very good to me. Unless you are trying to recreate a specific look, just how narrow you want to go is entirely up to you. A little could come off the brim and it would still look great. I personally wouldn't go any wider. Getting feedback is good, but at the end of the day go with what feels comfortable and natural to you. By the way, a full body shot is also useful when sizing up hats. Head and torso shots don't necessarily tell the whole picture. Or so it seems to me. Great hat and ensemble. Welcome to the Lounge! ;)

Why do you ask?
While I can't speak offhandedly for the Maltese Falcon hat, I must say you made a good first hat choice. :eusa_clap It looks great regardless of Falcon accuracy.

I know there are some real Bogart savvy folks around to give you feedback on the styling of your hat.

Welcome to the Lounge, hope you enjoy yourself here.

Thank you all for your honest feedback :)

I hope to keep learning more about great hats and great style.

I was exactly where you were about 4-5 months ago. Now I own 5 Akubras (though I've discovered that the thin-ribbon, wide brim look is what I prefer, so I only wear two of them).

Enjoy!

The one thing I would do is push the front of the crown up, or the back down, so that there is a slant up from the back to the front (or down from the front to the back. Whatever). The raked, tugboat look, I think would work really well.

Thanks for the tip. I'm picturing it now and I think thats a nice little detail I had planned on using but forgot to work in :eusa_doh:

I'll see what I can come up with

Hi,

Congrats for your first hat. Often, people begin with more moderately proportioned (modern style) hats, because classic proportions may be a little daunting. I see you have gone straight to them!

I second what Yeps suggests, BTW.
