Next time you can use a leather detergent which will rehydrate the hide as well as cleaning it.

There are several options, there are nubuk sprays which say they condition.
Colourlock sells "Aniline protector", which is a conditioner and waterproofer.

On thick suede/nubuk I actually used pure leather oil in the past. If you make sure that there is no wax content it will not harm the texture at all only darken the leather several shades. (will get lighter again over time and not leave any spots if done correctly)

After that I would waterproof it with a simple spray or liquid.
