Ink on the liner . . .

Is there any way to remove it? Especially if it's set in the fabric for 60 years?

Cheap hairspray like AquaNet is one thing that used to be good for taking out ballpoint pen ink. But you usually use that, blot, just some more, blot and then wash the item. For a liner...I don't know - it may leach through and stain the hat itself. And that would probably be my concern with anything that would take out ink - it leaching through or soaking through and damaging the crown of the hat itself.

If so, then whatever method you try will have to be somewhat agressive and would probably be safest to conduct after removing the liner. I have had good success with OxyClean for discoloration/stains on liners but haven't tried it on pen ink.

**ALSO NOTE that some have reported OxyClean has removed logos partially from the crown of the liner. I haven't had that happen to me but I lucked out. It may be well worth the effort to buy a yank of satin from the fabric area of Wal-Mart or the like and put some ballpoint pen lines on it, let them set for a day and then try different cleaning methods to get vague sense of what will happen with your 'vintage monogram' there.

Thanks Mike. I'll give it a shot. Maybe if I put something behind the liner like a towel, that should prevent any ink transfer.

Hmmm... I'll have to check that product out. I have a wonderful Disney with some light 'foxing' on the liner. I've been pondering ways to spot clean them without removing the liner on this one, if possible. I don't want to soak the whole liner and risk wrecking the logo.

J.T. did you spot clean while the liner was still in the hat?

Good luck with the Disney . . . I'm still killing myself for the chance I had to buy 2 Disney fedoras one brown and the other grey. Each was from a different seller btw.

I always remove the liner for cleaning. Dark hats are especially prone to losing a little bit of dye, which can deposit itself on the liner. The downside to washing body and liner seperately is, even when you are careful, older sweatbands will sometimes crack with the flexing that is necessary to re-install the liner.

What it boils down to is, "You pays your money and you takes your chances."
