Cowboys and archeologists always wear felt in sweltering heat.

Is a light weight felt considered OK for summer?

FWIW, I wear my heavy felt hats for outdoor work (cattle) all summer long. I'll switch to straw if it get up into the mid 90s, but otherwise, I stick with felt.

The novel "The Egyptologist" is about a fictional archeologist who fancies himself Carter's rival. In an attempt to impress Carter's British nobleman underwriter, he buys himself a homburg. The nobleman makes some remark to the effect that it's nice to see someone dressing appropriately, and not letting tradition go to pot. A great read, if you get the chance.

I wear western felt, mostly 100X beaver all year long, I think a person should wear what he likes on his head weather it be a straw or a felt hat.

I'm waiting for the weather to turn.
Last summer, I wore lightweight felt on some days when it was under 85. If it's hotter than that, straw is the way to go.
