Is chivalry dead?

I still encounter chivalrous men. So, no I don't believe chivalry is dead.

More often I think that there aren't many women around that act like ladies and deserve to be treated with chivalry.

My, how things have changed for the worse! Politeness, manners, courtesy, etiquette - all out the window!

It definitely does look that way. However it means it is more important for people like us, who have a sense of history and understand that we didn't invent everything, to show by example that there is another way of behaving. It is not always easy to do so, of course, but worthwhile in the end.

Do you know what I liked about this post? You ended it with a kiss. It's like, there's still hope.
Love it.
I would add my own kiss, but, I hardly know you, and that wouldn't be at all chivalrous.

Very true Mike. It's up to people like us to lead by example. I'm often astounded at how people conduct themselves. :(

GHT, I suppose that wasn't very 'ladylike' of me to do that (end with an X). Only recently I found out that 'X' was a kiss and 'O' was a hug. I thought it was the other way around. Imagine my shock...ha ha!

Whatever condition chivalry is in today is largely due to changes in women, not men IMHO.
I got so many "I can hold the door for myself" and "Don't you think I'm capable of opening my own door" here in Cali that I just try to judge based on the split-second I have to gauge someone in a doorway, elevator, etc. It's been longer since I got one of those lines, but I do tend to blame it more on women that men just being lame. But make no mistake, men are not the same today either. That's a whole other thread… :)

Guilty as charged. In recent times I have lost count of the number of younger people who have kindly offered me their seat, usually on our underground rail system, the one we call the tube.
How do I explain to these fresh faced travellers that I am actually one of them? Since my teens I have had this stalker, he's not a threat, just irritating. Whenever there is a camera produced, he gets his face in before me, he lives a lot in my shaving mirror and he can't resist impersonating me, when youngsters show acts of kindness. At other times, and I digress here, he has a perverse sense of humour. Like unpicking my clothing and resewing it so that it fits, but so much tighter. Buttons strain, seems expose the stitching and the waist needs expanders. It's such immature humour, but how do you explain that to a pretty, fresh-faced, young female student?
Best to just meekly say: "Thank you," and take the proferred seat. Besides, she would never understand that the stalker is just a jealous old wrinkly, whilst I, as everyone knows, is, and will always be, just eighteen.
So next time a smoothed skin person offers me their seat.............
Just two words, and the second one is off.

Question:
What is it with people and taking pictures?!
Just because they own a piece of technology that is able to snap a pic here or there, does not give them the right to take a stranger's photo without having their consent. And, NO boys, I don't find that a compliment, that behaviour is just :nono: ....disrespectful and a bit creepy.

There was a time, in an era not so long ago, when a lady could wear a beautiful cocktail gown. She might, in fact, most probably would, expose more than a little decollettage. She wore a beautiful dress to enhance her beautiful curves. Gentlemen would discretely glimpse, admire and tactfully look away. Or at least they wouldn't ever get caught leching. Women would also look, compare and either think 'Bitch.' or they would look and think: "not as good as mine sister." And also look away. It was a time of respect, of titilation within accepted boundaries.
The thought of anyone photographing, other than the official photographer, was the ultimate faux pas. When did it all change?

My best guess is: the same time we became able to carry a camera, a phone, a planner and a game-boy in the same gadget.
I concur. If you give someone a camera, they're going to use it; give everyone a camera, and the associated problems multiply exponentially. I'm no Luddite, but I much preferred the days when products served a specific function and performed well, as opposed to modern day products that perform a multitude of functions poorly.

I know there are a lot of large companies for which cell phones with built-in cameras presented problems as well. For example, when cell phone cameras started becoming more prevalent the Boeing Company was forced to institute a policy that disallowed their employees and visitors from bringing their cell phones with cameras into the Boeing facilities in order to protect their intellectual properties. Needless to say, many employees and visitors were "displeased" with these security measures, and the Boeing Company was forced to deal with that as well. These days the confiscation of such devices is common practice, but in the early days it was problematic at best.

Hi All

I have a funny door opening story, just last week upon existing a building a young lady approaches to enter with her dim wit escort in tow.
I proceed like any gentleman would do, to hold the door for the young lady, her reply thank you sir, I tip my fedora and reply your welcome young lady, I continue to hold door for dim wit escort who is lagging behind, upon entry dim wit comments " I don't need no one opening no doors for me, I reply, Its not easy pulling ones trousers up and opening a door at the same time, LOL dim wits trousers were down around his butt and dragging at his feet. He just gave me a dumb look and strolled away.

Best regards

Indeed.
I'm a firm believer in having one thing that does one thing - but does it well.
I use my phone for it's original purpose - as a way to communicate.
When I want to take pictures - I take out my camera. Not fooling with "Oh, I'm just holding my phone up high, I'm so not photographing you" - folks can see I'm snapping pictures (what else can a Canon do?!) :D

^ Among other things, you probably confused him with your use of the word "trousers". lol

Fun with pants.

I was once standing in line at a grocery store with two "youts" with sagging pants and plenty of attitude.

Once I explained to them the origins of wearing pants like that and the offering they were making was directly from prison society they inched their pants up.
