I feel I walked a middle ground when I sold my Sam walker. I try my best to do my research on anything I sell, so I knew the history of SW. However, I wanted to get snapped up in the search terms by people looking for aero's as a cheaper alternative.
I said "based on aero barnstormer" in the hopes I gain the benefit of the brand association without misleading people on the quality. I have wondered how people would react to that, is it still shady? I won't be buying another one so I don't mind self reporting.
If I was the potential buyer, it wouldn't seem 'wrong' to me for that to be in the actual auction text as long as it was clear that it wasn't implying any sort of official status or approval by Aero. Where it would rankle would be if it was in the auction title, in which case it'd be on a par with " X X Brand jacket like Aero, Real McCoys, Buzz Rickson", the brand names being inserted to pick up on keyword searches. I've always considered that to be underhand and intensely annoying when you run a search narrowing it down by brand and find half your returns aren't that brand at all. EBay's rules consider it "search and browse manipulation" and officially for bid it, though of course now that is handled by AI, it's pretty much always ignored. It's better than with hats, though. Try doing a search for "Stetson" on eBay.... their system clearly just thinks it's another word for "hat".
